Please please please get all your facts right before commenting upon something as important as the \" DAY OF ASHURA\" .
The shia are the ones who do all what is mentioned in your posts! As for the people of \" Sunnah\" , then we have the significance of this month being one of the four sacred months appointed by Allaah The Most High. It is also the -as said - the first month of the islamic year. The significance of the 10th of Muharram is NOT the remembrance of the Martyrdom of Hussain (may Allaah be pleased with him) but rather, it is to do with the the day when Allaah, The Most High, rescued Musa (aleyhi salaam) and his people from the evil of pharaoh. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said we as Muslims have more right to the claim of Musa than the jews, so he fasted the 10th of MUHARRAM! He also said that the following year he would fast the 9th of Muharram too, so as to be different from the jews.
Please do not spread this shia heresy to be the thing of all muslims.

Sherbat and water is offered during Muharram as the great Imam Hussein was not given food and even water by the enemies. Therefore, in his memory water and sherbet is offered by Muslims during these days of Muharram. All Muslims mourn for the death of Imam Hussein during Muharram.

Muharram is observed by all Muslims to mourn the death of Imam Hussein. It is a very great sacrifice by great Imam Hussein in human history. After Ramzan, Muharram is holy month for Muslim brothers and in the memory of Imam Hussein' s sacrifice, all Muslims fast during this holy month.

Assalaamualaykum. (i forgot to say that in my last post.
Brothers and sisters, please do not take offense at the way i write. We need to be clear about the " Special" days in our religion. We make special, what Allaah The Most Highand his Messenger (peace be upon him) made special. We have the Quran and the Hadith with the understanding of the " Best generation" of people, whom lived along-side the Messenger (peace be upon him). There is nothing of evidence in relation to fasting the whole month of Muharram except for the fasting of the 9th and the 10th!
The feeding and giving drink to the people as a reminder of the death of our beloved Hussain (may Allaah be pleased with him) has nothing to do with the significance of muharram.
Yes, we all, from ahlus-sunnah are very saddened at the events which took place with the beloved grandson of the prophet, but we are not to go and make " Special days" on our own whims and desires. Why do we not commemorate the martyrdom of Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) or the martyrdom of Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him too)?
These people have great great virtues too!
We should always remember the sacrifices made by those who preceded us in this beautiful religion of ours, but we stop where Allaah and his Messenger stopped. May Allaah guide us all to that which is the truth and that which is pleasing to him.
