Due Date Club May 2008:breast feeding issue

Hello All,
I am from July board and is having problem keeping my son awake while breast feeding. He is 6wks old and as soon he come to the breast, he suckles for 5 minutes and will sleep, he won' t take the next breast...I have tried everything [talking, stroking, changing diaper, wiping his face with damp cloth] to keep him awake while feeding but he just won' t take the breast. How are your babies doing ? do they also sleep ? any suggestions on keeping baby awake while breast feeding?
Thanks,
Ishi

Hi,
Sai has started showing strange behaviour. Since I started working, he does not want to feed of breast at day time anymore. During weekends I want to breast feed him during the day so that I don' t have to pump so much but he throws a big tantrum the moment I bring him close to my breast.Strangely enough, he does not have any issue breast feeding at night. He wakes up once or twice in the night time and feeds on breast and goes back to sleep. I feel bad when he does not want to take my breast, but what can I do :(.
Love

Babies r used to daily routine. Now Sai seems to have adjusted to day care settings and bottlefeeding breast milk. Also for a baby drinking from bottle is easier than breastfeeding.Thats why its not advisable to introduce a bottle before breastfeeding is established.
Also sometimes babies refuse breast and its very difficult to even know the reason.Abhi does that a lot of times. But u will need to breastfeed atleast sometime to get pumped milk.j ust keep trying. It may just be a temporary problem.anyway daytime u have to pump except on weekends. Its good he is breastfeeding at night probably because that time he is sleepy and he finds it very soothing. Also he must be half asleep while feeding.

Thanks Sabitha, read ur message on orkut. I have not been pumping at all. I depend on aadi to feed on the breast. I think I will start doing it now since i really do not want to increase formula frequency, if i can avoid.

thanks!

My son Abhishek used to do the same.Have u got ur sons weight checked up.I would say if he is gaining well dont worry too much.Usually when u r breastfeeding u start with the breast which was last fed. This can be a little confusing when baby sleeps 5 minutes after drinking. When does he wake up again for a feed.sometimes the duration may be less than 2 hours.Still my son sleeps off.but now he will go on feeding on one breast and sleep,if i try to take breast away he will suck again. If i try to offer other breast he wont take it.I just somehow try to balance breasts or milk will reduce in one.Have u tried expressing milk and feeding.Does he still sleep off.I think u can inform his pediatrician about thos problem.Looks like u have tried everything to keep him awake.Hopefully the problem will become ok as he grows up.Just see that baby' s weight is gaining and see that ur milk supply is not reducing.u can punp the breast he is not feeding. If he feeds on left and sleeps off, pump the right just to balance milk supply.U can ask a lactation consultant' s help also.

Hi Sabitha,
thanks for your message....yeah I am pumping my breast using hospital grade medela breast pump and then feeding breast milk using bottle...I did meet couple of lactation consultants, both the consultants suggested that if baby does not feed from breast I should pump my breast and not starve my baby....but I am little apprehensive using pump as it may stimulat efor over production of milk ....
Take care,
Ishi

Hi Sabitha, and all

I have been breastfeeding, and usually i feed only on one side and give the other side when in the next feed. I feel this enables me to have one side filled for the next feed. Could this approach lead to a decrease in milk production? I am asking this question because I feel (I might be wrong) that slowly the milk production is decreasing as Aadi demands milk every 1.5 - 2 hrs. earlier he used to go for 2.5 hrs. It could be because as the baby is growing he is demanding more and that much he is not getting by BF. As a result I give one or two feeds of formula, so that he is fed well and breasts could be full for the next time (which is an interval of 2 hrs max.)

Please advise whether I am doing it right?
