The pacifier should be the last resort. First try to soothe your baby. Only if your baby still doesnt stop crying, use a pacifier. I have never used a pacifier for my daughter though.

Before you pop a pacifier into your babys mouth find the cause of your babys discomfort.See if hes properly fed, whether hes comfortable;that means hes not feeling WARM or cold, whether hes sleepy or lacking attention and just want to be carried or cuddled,or that he doesnt have any tummy ache.first try to understand what is bothering him and try to treat it .if hes hungry hell definetly show interest if u feed him.Dont wrap him in lots of clothing just because u think that he might be feeling cold ,;he might be sweating inside .Make him feel comfortable.Try to rock him a little and see if hes sleepy. And if hes having any tummyache or some other problem hell be crying conti nuosly.Babys love to suckle whenever they are hungry or just for the pleasure of it,for a feeling of security. So if he sucks on the pacifier even after his tummys full, let him do it for sometime and then try to distract him,but dont let him get addicted toit ,eventhough sucking on a pacifier is much better than thumb sucking.try to pick him up and cuddle him and make him stop crying.Dont depend on a pacifier everytime.I agree with Mr.Suresh in that pacifier should be used only as a last resort.

As I said earlier pacifiers are used for babies with intense sucking needs, like when they try to suck on fingers even after a good feed.
when you buy a pacifier always go for the natural rubber or silicon rubber one ,and that which resembles a real nipple inorder to prevent improper breathing and abnormal moulding of your babys jaws.use it only when necessary and not round the clock.Do not hang it around your babys neck with a string to prevent accidental strangling. And always remember to rinse it with hot water before use.

my son uses the pacifier quite often, and of course, as long as he isnt popping one in his mouth he is 26 mos old and he knows where his pacifiers are kept. :- , out of boredom or just coz he has nothing else to do. I have had lots of people tell me that he shouldnt be using it, but if it comforts him, i am not the one to out him through misery for no reason. I used to suck my thumb when i was a little kid and i gave it up all by myself my parents tried every possible thing to make me quit and i wouldnt budge!, and i am sure my son will give up on his own. my torturing him to give up will only make him want his pacifier more.
good luck
