Tie up your hair in a neat bun and keep your baby away from it. DO NOT let him get his hands on your hair, no matter how much he cries. He will fall asleep automatically when hes sleepy. You should have discouraged this from the start!

Dear mom,
dont get frustrated with your baby. Please remember that babies always tend to develop some wierd habit which is just a passing phase of his growing up.Since they dont have any other ways to communicate, they just acquire some habits which might make you pull out Your own hair!!
The trick lies in one word;DISTRACTION.Since your babys one year old,its high time you introduced your baby into the wonderful world of books. You could buy some small books on words, alphabets, fruits and animals.Always remember to buy books with hard pages others wise it will last only for a minute!Next dont let your baby get away with whatever he want.Try to make him understand between right and wrong. For example;when they do something naughty tell them no,dont do It.Like in this case, you can tell, see its hurting mummy and make some sound like ooh or aah.If he still continues ,slightly click on babys knuckles and say no.firmly.He might howl more loudly, but you can be sure that the message will be registered in his mind. And dont worry, you are not doing something bad.Its only for his own good.Believe me Im a mom myself and I have been successful with this technique. But dont do it often, reserve it for only big mistakes. The UNDERLYING FACTOR IS after the third time, he might slowly hesitate from doing it.
Before going to bed,try to give him a warm bathjust washing his face ,hands and legs is good enoughto refresh himself, give him milk and after that try to read for him.Initially he might not show any interest but itll slowly catch up.Let him play with books during day time to initiate interest.Keep a special toy reserved for night and let him play with that while you read. And you can even tie up your hair with a cloth for a few days, until he loses interest.

Hi!
Its at this age (1year) that kids try to understand about shapes and sizes of object, the try to catch hold of every thing which comes across and play with it, now they understand wot u r telling them, I agree with doc, the best way is distraction. This will take some time, but it will work.
