Womens Issues:how to drape a saree?
2005-06-17
Name: newbie to saree

Hello,

I do hope someone can help me. My fiance's family are opposed to our relationship for a lot of reasons. The main being that I am a white girl, with that said we've decided to marry early next year and my fiance has asked me to wear a saree. I have agreed but I am scared because I do not know how to wear one. I came across a site that sells automatic sarees that are stiched with pleats in it so that all you do is wrap and drape over your shoulder. I really want to wear one the right way. I don't want his family to think I am stupid or uncaring enough to learn. I don't know any female indians and I'd prefer my fiance didn't see the saree before the wedding. I want to surprise him and his family by wearing the saree correctly and proudly. Can anyone here offer some help to me? How do I drape a saree properly? Should a bridal saree be worn differently? So many questions and I have no answers. please help me

Hi,

Its good to know somebody abroad wants to learn how to wear sarees whereas in india the culture is getting vanished with the so called western apparels coming to india.

Anyway please mail me at poornima at enventureonline dot com if your problem is not yet resolved. Due to ill health i could not browse this site for about a month's time.

Today i saw your message and thought i can send a reply.

Regards,
Poornima.

hi newbie to saree,

i am an indian but i am still unable to wear the saree properly, i need my husbands help when i do wear it. i dont wear it too often, though, just twice or thrice a year on some ocassion. so just to assure u, in case u r not able to learn to wear the saree, its ok.

its sweet that u want to surprise ur fiance and hubby by wearing a saree urself on ur wedding day, but i think its gonna be difficult, not impossible though. reading ur posts here that u dont hv any indian female friends nor any indian parlour nearby, it would be a good idea to wear the readily stitched and pleated saree. one of my friend has them and no one can make out the difference whether its the actual saree or the stitched one. so u can go for it.

another thing u can do is ask ur fiance's mom or sis for help to wear the saree. this might help u to get close to them and they might like the idea that u asked them for help. and then after ur wedding, u can learn to wear the saree from them. just a suggestion.

hope it helps. bye. good luck on ur wedding.

Hi There,

Thanks for your advice Rada, unfortunately there are no Indian beauty parlour or anything like it here in Brisbane... It seems that there isnt a very large indian community but I'll keep my ear to the ground for more news

Hi Sneha,

My fiance is from Hyderabad if that is of help to you. I had no idea that locality would have something to do with how to drape the saree, so thanks for letting me know that. Do you know how it is that I should drape it based on that? It has been hard coosing a saree also because I wanted to go for white and again where I live the closest store selling sarees is a 17 hour drive away so we have been looking online. I've settled on a white silk blend with gold.

Hi Zee,

No I am afraid any Indian females i know are living overseas so there is no one close to wear I live who can help me... I thought I would get one and practice putting it on lots and lots so that when the wedding came I would be able to wear it correctly myself.
