Due Date Club June 2004:My Appt

Dear All,
Yesterday I had my u/s and regular prenatal appt. Well, it didn't go very well. My hubby couldn't join me as he was having some very important meeting. I really wanted him to come as u/s is a special event for us. I was waiting in the lounge when he called up and the receptionist told him that I am already in the u/s room, so he dropped the idea of coming. ( I have not told him the details about the appt yet, and he is really eager to know it). When I went in u/s room, the tech was really frustrated 'coz of some technical problem in the m/c and moreover she had put some wrong data for some of the other patients which she realized only when I went in the room. She just took the measurements hurriedly. When I asked her that I would like to see the baby, she just scanned everything in a zippy and when asked for explaining everything, she said doctor will explain everything. I had heard a case wherein a baby was borned without arms in the same hospital under my doctor and the parents were not told earlier abt it, so I told her I would like to see all the parts, she said it is not possible as baby is curled up. After that I was supposed to see doctor, but doctor had already left for some surgery and I had to see the nurse instead. I like that nurse, but at such times you really want to see the doctor, right.
Well, I still have that happy icon on, the reason is nurse told me that amniotic fluid level is good. The baby is growing fine. My weight gain is okay. And other things like BP and all is good, the glucose test was fine. I have some iron deficiency, so she gave me the prescription for iron tablets.
There is something, I am bit confused about. As per yesterday's ultra-sound, my EDD is 8th June, which I guess is calculated as per baby's growth, whereas my actual EDD is 20th June. When I asked my nurse about this difference, she said, they will still go with the old EDD. There is a difference of more than 2 weeks between the two EDDs, does this mean that baby is overgrown, well, as per me, yes, but my nurse said it is okay. But I know, in Chetana's and other's case, the difference is just one week and still doctor's are concerned about the same. May be I will talk with my sis or aunt and ask about the same. That's all the update from me.

Love,
Aboli.

Dear Aboli,

Good to know that everything is fine with u and ur baby. If your fluid level, diabetes results all are normal then don't worry abt u/s measurement. My friend who delivered last month was told based on the u/s that she is gng to deliver one week earlier. But doctor didn't chg her due date and she delivered one day after her due date.
So, don't worry.

take care
luv
daizy

Dear Aboli,

As long as you have two weeks descripancy it's OK.

You could even sometime get this difference in two different U/S. This is because baby's growth is sparse. Sometime you can have it a week or two ahead and sometime as expected. You are much in the standard deviation and don't get worried.

Be good with Irong uptake.

You are going just good as you should. Should you still be worried give a call to your Dr. and speak on the phone atleast.

Good luck
Archie

hai,
i dont think u need to be worried about the diff in dates.even when there is no confusion with days it is perfectly normal for babies to come anytime around 36 to 42 weeks

usually preg lasts about 266 days from conception and the most likely time of conception is when u ovulate.in a normal 28 day cycle this happens about 14 days before the next period is due,so if in a 28 day cycle it is assumed that u ovulate on the 14 day from the beginning of ur periods.
so ur approximate duedate is calculated as 266 days from day of conception or 266+14=280 days from the first day of ur last menustral period.

but it is not necessary that everbody ovulates exactly on the 14 th day and the union of sperm and egg takes place on the same day.

so if there is a diff between ur edd from calculation and from ultrasound and everthing else is ok it just means u didnt conceive on the 14th day but on someother day.

as per calculation i am due on aug 6 and as per ultrasound i am due on aug 1.my doc said something like above only and she is not at all concerned ,said it is perfectly normal and has recorded both dates everywhere

so dont worry
regards dm

Dear DM,
Thanks for the info abt the EDD calculation. In my case, my periods were extremely irregular. The cycle goes anywhere from 65-90 days. So, there has always been confusion in calculation of my EDD. The first EDD given to me was through u/s only. Anyways, I am relieved now after all of ur answers and talking with my sis who is a gynac. Thanks again.

Love,
Aboli.

Aboli,
Don't worry about the baby being 2 weeks bigger based on ultrasound measurements. I guess I should explain my situation again - during one of my ultrasounds back when I was at the tail end of my low AFP scare, my perinatologist said that she is about 1 week bigger per u/s measurements. He said that if the baby is 1 week bigger, they sometimes change the due date, sometimes they don't b/c it is within standard deviation of 2 weeks. My perinatologist marked the earlier date, but my ob is not concerned about it and has left the EDD early July date in his chart even though the perinatologist (specialist) has said June 29.

My point about my baby being a little big at 24 weeks was that I should have kinda guessed that I probably had Gestational Diabetes based on that - this is me just chatting, however and is not based on any scientific facts. GD babies are usually bigger, but I have no idea whether or not that means they would also be bigger before the 9th month. I was just commenting on my baby being a little taller and should have given me a hint that maybe I'd have GD, however their is no scientific issue here and no doc has told me they are concerned at all with my baby's size just yet. They say my baby is doing well with size and not to be concerned (especially since my sugars are doing well with diet and exercise).

Don't worry about it unless the doc says there is a problem!

I just happen to have fail every test given in this pregnancy!! Just kidding...I have faith that my baby will be healthy!!

Think positive and keep praying!
lots of love,
Chetna

Dear Chetana,
Thanks a lot for explaining to me the details. Well, I was just a bit concerned as I could not get the doctor's opinion on this matter. I just spoke with my sis in India and she said that in u/s they take measurements of different parts, associate the age of baby with that and then finally give the average date. She also told me that doctors usually like to go as per the very first EDD given. After talking to her and after reading your message, I am quite at peace now. :-).
Sandhya and VM, thanks for your replies too.

Love,
Aboli.
