Hi friends,

I am from the August board. But I need your opinion and some direction badly so I am sharing this with you all.....

Everything was fine going on fine with my PG till Saturday morning when I went to pick up my Triple test results. And to our disappointment we came to know that 1 of the 3 elements of the Triple Test that is AFP is very high and positive in my case. Now this high AFP indicates larger possibilities of NTD i.e. neural tube defect. Also my HCG is high. My Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 21 are fine. My gynae directed me to consult a genesist straightaway and we did so. He advised us to get a latest ultrasound done. Upon seeing the u/s result, my genesist advised me that everything is normal and that I can go home.

But friends I am not at peace since I came to know of my positive AFP. I am so worried. I am so depressed and can not see any reason but am going on crying. I am so much worried. I need your opinion. Have anyone of you come across any such instance. What should be done?

Though I was referred to one of the best genesist in India but I am not satisfied. I want some expert to assure me that everything will be fine and my baby will not have any problems.

Guys need your immediate advise and your direction.

i hope by now your doubt must have been cleared and must have also delivered a healthy baby!

I have been currently diagnosed with a +ve trisomy 18 screen after the triple market test. am really worried. could you let me know which genesist you consulted and what the docotor said in your case.

I can understand your situation. Even if doctor says everything is normal we do not believe. I don't know much minute details about AFP test. But, I know sometimes u get false positive or negative. Also, doctors here are very careful about all the tests and results because they don't want to take any chance. I can suggest you to take other doctors opinion like if u know some doctor in india..consult her. You can call ur doc's office and schedule an appt with doc and ask her all the questions coming to ur mind. It will give u peace of mind. Just think positively.

I can totally understand what ur going through dear.
When AFp test is done,doc will tell u that there may be positive and negative but the tests are not accurate,somtimes it may be false even its positive or negative,there is one more test done in 13th week ie ultra sound and they will take 4 drops of blood from ur hand on to a piece of paper like thing and check for babys back,ie spinal cord and also for downsyndrome.
You said they did u a ultra sound and found everything is normal,so don't worry dear,here if there is something they will let u know about it,and if u still have dout, and i think there are other test to find out about it dear,u can again take a test or consult a different gyno.One of my friend was told the baby might be having heart problem and also downsyndrome,bec baby's heart beat was very very high during 3 month of preg,so at 5th month,when they did all the test and the heart beat had come back to normal,just last week she gave birth to baby boy and baby is healthy and fine.
Just go for second opinion,to a specialist dear.

I'm not sure what the AFP stands for...but I've heard these tests can give false positive results, such as what you had. If your doctor gave you the OK after the ultrasound, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. This is why they do the ultrasounds...just to be sure.

What else did your doctor say? Did he give his opinion as to why the AFP is high?

I'm sure you've had a scare, but don't worry, since your doc gave you the OK....
