I have been meditating for almost a year now and I still find it difficult sometimes. The most difficult part is to make sure that your mind is completely free of all thoughts. I often find myself drifting off in the middle of my meditation sessions and then get distracted. I do not know hoe do I handle this. I get very uneasy and some or the other thought just keeps crossing my mind.

Rachit replied. Before Meditating you have to understand nature of Mind . Mind is a bundle of thoughts which always remain in future or Pat . Present state is not nature of Mind . It is true inner glamor or happiness can only be attain only in thoughtless state but to force Mind to get calm or deviate Mind with positive thoughts is not the solution .
By doing any sort of imagination or concentration .you can only suppress thoughts for some time but do not remove it from your heart .
To remove thoughts from your mind you just need to watch them .Let them go wherever they are going . Do not go along with them . Just let them go .While meditating thoughts will come and go but you feel really better after meditating process .
Rita replied. Shridhar, I too get distractions, but I simply deal with them or ignore them.
If you have negative thoughts persistently creeping into your mind, just BRIDGE all your negative thoughts over to the positive ones.
For example, you might have a negative thought such as \" I look awful with extra pounds. I hate my body.\" Stop meditating and immediately tackle that thought with a positive one: \" Anyway, I can always lose a few pounds. No matter however much I weigh, I always look fabulous.\" Spend your time on the practice of bridging your thoughts. In time, you' ll see less and less of your distractions. Try it and you' ll see.
BEFORE you ever do any meditation, try daydreaming with your eyes opened/half-opened. Daydreams put you in Alpha trance (the light kind practised in meditation/yoga). Just daydream anything - whatever makes you feel positive and calm.
For exercises, daydream plain colours on your mental screen, making each colour as vivid as possible. Think nuances of blues, yellows, reds, etc. Now think of textures: lumps, canvas, cloth, sand, etc. Also, try thinking of paints in varied mediums: watercolours, acrylics, etc. For more advanced daydreaming techniques, try thinking of plants, sky, river, lakes, winds, sounds, etc. Rule: always think POSITIVE and positive follows.
