Breastfeeding:When to wean and how to go about it...

Hi all,

My daughter is going to be 1 year old and she is still on breast milk and semi solids.

I want to know what is the best age to wean her completely from the breast and how do i go about it so that she adjusts to cow' s milk and solids and also the breasts do not feel heavy.

Your replies are highly appreciated.

no, my milk hasnt completly dried up...
but neither do my breasts feel very heavy or leak... if u do 1 feed at a time ur body relises it n adjusts the milk flow so with time it diminishes n then dissapears ).. like when u start solids...
its been 2 - 2.5 weeks since i weaned her off.. donno how long it will take to completly dry the milk.

Firstly congratulations to you and your daughter for successfully breastfeeding for a year. It is a wonderful achievement.

When to complety wean off a child entirely depends on the willingness of mother and child. However, It is recommended by pediacs to wean a child off slowly after the first year, As breastmilk is not that nutrious later.
My daughter is 15 months old and completely weaned off. I started when she was around 13 months.

To begin with, start with one feed at a time, usually a feed that is not her favorite feed, like after her bath or before bedtime etc. So if yoiur daughter breastfeeds teice a day , say, pick a feed that you guess would be easiest and do not feed her then, if she is hungry then give her some food or cows milk etc.
But be sure you are going to have to face some resistence from your baby.
I was lucky my DH did not make a huge cry and took around 3-4 days to wean her off feach feed.
I first started off with the night time feeds.. that helped her sleep thru the night. Then the feed she took before bedtime and later the afternoon feeds.
In case your daughter sleeps with the help of the feed. you can try to get someone else to put her to sleep and see if u can wean her off that way...

Take care
and all the best

Hi Aradhana,

I have read your suggestion for weaning off the child. Could you please let me know how did you wean the child´ s night feeding. Its really getting tough for me to wean her off in the night..She is 1 yr old now and still wakes up 2-3 times in the night, stated srying and ask for feeding and then go back to sleep.

Your reply wpuld be a great help..
thx

my question , is it fine if i wean right now when she is teething need help in pain and need comfort.

and what should i do to get her intrested in cow milk? when i am weaning her (skip one feeding) she is very fussy and she is not eating at all( till the next feeding time) ....no solid, no milk & no juice.... i feel very bad not taking good care of her.

well some people suggest me let her cry and stay hungry even 2-3 day she will eventually drink milk if she doesnt have any other choice.

please hlep me what should i do......am i doing right thing?

Thank you.
