Milestones:Is my baby's weight gain normal?

Hi fellow parents,

My dear wifey is concerned that our princess has not gain sufficient weight over the last 3 months. What disturbs her is that in the first 3 months she gained weight quite rapidly, several kg´ s altogether. But in the last 3 she gained just 1 KG. Since the Baby looks healthy and happy. I ask her not to worry, but my consolation doesn´ t help much. Do help us out.

Is there a formula to work out what should be an ideal baby´ s weight gain?
Is our baby's weight gain normal?

Please do help us out, I have included her birth weight and other relevant details below.

30 Dec Birth Weight: 2.75 kg
6 April After 3 months 7 days: 6.6 kg
20 July After 6 months and 20 days: 7.6 kg

Warm wishes,
Bangalore Dad

Hey her weight gain seems perfectly ok. My daughter also had a birth weight of 2.75 Kg. She was born 17 days early on 22nd feb 2009. Was ur daughter born on time or early. Now my daugter weighs 8.5 Kg. Hey also what is ur daughter doing in term of milestones. I am too worried that my 8 month old daughter is not pulling self to a sitting position. She sits without support for long if i make her sit. When did ur daughter pull herself to a sitting position. Pls reply

The calculation is:
First 3 months: 30 gms per day (900g per month)
4-6 months: 20 gms per day (600g per month)
7-9 months: 15 gms per day (450g per month) and
10-12 months: 12 gms per day (360g per month)
Normally, babies lose a bit of birthweight in the first few days, but regain their birthweight after 2 weeks from birth. So, you can start the calculation as 2.75 kg from 14 of Jan, and then add the per day weight as mentioned above.

Ideally, her weight should have been approximately 6.9 kgs on 20 July. So, she is infact on the heavier side.

About her gaining rapidly and then gradually, it may be normal, but better check with the doc. Has there been a decline in breastfeeding after introduction of solids ? Her weight is basically fine.

Dear Mel,

Thank you so very much for your kind and detailed response. You´ ve certainly put my mind at rest. My dear wifey is taking it easy for now, but I can sense it won´ t take her long to get tense again. But that´ s okay. That´ s what husbands are for, right? :-)

Warm wishes,
Bangalore Dad
