Hi,
Iam 6 weeks pregnant and yesterday was my first scan.There is a sac, but no fetal pole seen, but my HCG levels are 4789 and the estrogen and progesterone levels are also good My doc said she will do another scan next week.Iam so much worried that there is no fetal pole or heartbeat.Can anybody tell me if they had this type of situation or when is the fetal pole seen?Thanks in advance.

All the best! My perspective is that even if you stop the medications,if the fetus was to survive it will survive.

And if you continue the medications, you are sustaining a sac for a week more in hope ,but remember ,chances are 30-40 % about good news. But may be you wont regret later that you didnt give the best try.

If I were in your place , I would extend for a week longer.But finally you have to decide. MadhuC replied. I can understand your anxiety about whether to stop medications .

Medical knowledge says that a sac of diameter more than or equal to 16mm on vaginal scan without cardiac activity/fetalpole ,chances are it is a nonviable pregnancy.

Your sac size is already 20 mm as you mentioned.

The reason doc says to stop medications is to avoid excessive bleeding on continuing a possibly failed pregnancy and unwanted patient anxiety.

But choice is yours,you can discuss with your doc saying you would want to wait and watch for a weeek with medications.

Actually,before that you may ask for Serial BETA HCG blood test to detect failing pregnancy.

Speak openly about your anxiety to your doc too.

Hope it helped,Anu. MadhuC replied. Dont panic ,Anu . Can you tell me the sac size today and whether any yolk sac seen ?May be the growth is too slow for it to survive .Where are you taking treatment? Follow your doctor' s instructions and dont worry.

Madhu MadhuC replied. Your sac size is 1 cms by vaginal scan, so you are about 5 weeks by scan which is more accurate calculation than your pregnancy weeks of 6 weeks by periods date.

So it is normal for not seeing a fetal pole at just 5 weeks by scan,it will be seen in another one week later. This difference could be due to a slight delay in embryo implantation after the embryo transfer which is normal.

Believe me ,dont worry about these details, just pray to God and be positive. Keep us posted about the good news !!

Madhu MadhuC replied. If you could tell me the details of the scan- scan date, sac size by scan ,how many weeks gestation by scan and whether yolk sac also seen ,whether it was a vaginal scan or done on the lower belly. I can help you then.
