Due Date Club January 2006:Induction at 41 1/2 weeks - Archie please reply

Hi

Our OB had to leave for India all of a sudden (think of a bad time) for 2 weeks and will come back on Feb 7th. Our due date is Jan 27th.

we met another OB (they operate in a group) on Friday who checked and claims the baby could be app 6 1/2 pounds. But she checked with our regular OB's nurse and scheduled an induction on Feb 7th. We didnt want to wait till that date but she kept saying we will be in our 42nd week which is fine.

We suspect they may just be wanting to schedule it based on our OB's return date and not based on the baby weight(I am 5 feet tall)or other parameters.

Obviously we are very concerned and plan on asking next week for an ultrasound. But Archie

1) what are the parameters we need to look out for when deciding it is ok to wait till that long?

2) Will an ultrasound next week help in deciding when is it safe to induce (Our regular OB kept saying baby cannot get too big for my size and now they seem to be changing their tune because of her visit to India). we had an ultrasound around 19th week and they are not even scheduling another one on their own.

It is very frusturating and causing a lot of distrust on our OB. Please reply...

Thanks

Subject:  postdate pregnancy

KP,
managing postdate pregnancies vary from Dr. to Dr. There is not such a set rule to follow. Also there is no common rule for height and parameters to worry. Yes, generally it is difficult to deliver over 8 pounds baby for thin built or short girl. But it isn't always the case, a friend of mine who is very thin delivered three over 10 pounds happily.

you may get into labor naturally before scheduled induction and your new ob will take action on that spot.

otherwise scheduling induction on 7th feb is wise idea because your ob will be back to handle the situation. new ob is substitute and will do job on emergency and required basis not to elect an C-section or induction.

don't get upset. you may speak to Ob and may get an ultrasound done to note afi and placenta situation. otherwise waiting till 42nd week is common for some OBs.

Have any of you pierced your baby´ s ears?
Have any of you pierced your baby' s ears? Where did you get it done? Were you able to change the earrings after the piercing and put on indian ear rings? My pediatrician does not do it, and she suggested that i take tanvi to the mall. Pls share your experiences at the mall if you' ve had any.

Ear piercing
My daughter was 5 months old when we decided to get her ear pierced. The non medical ear piercing options are painful and unsafe with possibilities of hepatitis, viruses and even HIV and I can never recommend it. My husband and I were looking for a safe, modern, gun shot piercing option which is completely safe, pain-free and with a traditional touch as well.
