Hi,

I am new to this message board.

I am expecting my second baby in October.
I am now 27 weeks in Pregnancy.
Yesterday Doctor told me that I got positive for GD Test (Gestational Diabetes).

I am now little bit concerned.

I am a south Indian living in USA.

Can anyone give me direction regarding the diet control for South Indian food. I browsed some american sites for diet, but they are talking about american food style.

I appreaciate your help.

thanks

Ramya

Welcome to the board and congrats.

I think Padmaja is right, don't worry if you fail 1 hr test and if you have failed 3 hr test then see if you can get indian dietician since all girls have different diet plans based on the lavel of sugar. Follow what dietician says even if you get american one she will definately able to guide you for indian food.

Best of luck and keep in touch.

Welcome to the board. First of all let me know if u failed 1 hour test or three hour screening. If it is one hour test try not to worry as most of us will clear three hour test, I have been there few weeks back.

If it is 3 hour test, your
OBGYN will send you to dietician where in you can say your diet preferences and they will go from there.
If they said you have GD after three hour testing then my suggestions are:

1. Avoid sugar all together even in milk
2. Limit carbohydrates which are mostly present in rice and cereal.
3. Limit dal or avoid it completely
4.Try to limit fruit juices instead you can eat fruits 2/3 a day
5. Eat prunes, dates, nuts as badam, raisins etc.
Being a telugu girl myself I can imagine how we can't make through a meal with out rice but it is better to eat roti than rice.
Best suggestion is try walking after every meal for at least 15 mts.

If you have Indian store in the area you live in buy broken wheat rice( wheat rava)cook it as you cook rice in cooker and eat it instead of rice as it has less carbohydrates.

Take care and try not to worry too much as GD disappears after the delivery of the baby and since you are already in the final phase of the pregnancy GD will in no way affects your baby if your sugar level is under control.

Anyways let me know if it is one hour result you are worried about or three hour testing. If you need any more suggestione talk it out here as the girls are cool here !!!

Take care and baby smiles!!!!

Hi,

I failed on the 1 hour GD test.
OBGYN suggested dietician immediately, as the sugar level is high (258)

That's the reason OBGYN didn't go for the 3 hour test.

From last 2 days I got lectures from Dietician and Nurse Educator regarding the GD.

Diabetes Nurse Educator gave the Sugar test machine to monitor the sugar levels 3 times a day. No big improvements so far. It is between 109-179.

I will soon keep posted the updates.

thank you all.
