Sleeping:toddler not sleeping through

Hi,
My son is 18 months old and still not sleeping through the night. He was weaned off night feeds many months ago and I am very sure that he does not expect a feed in the middle of the night anymore. We' ve also tried changing the temperature of his room - colder, hotter - but nothing seems to work. We' ve tried both milk and porridge as the last feed at night, but either way he still wakes up 3-4 times and cries loudly. And he' s very active so he is very tired by the time he goes to bed. So if its not hunger, cold, heat, restlessness.... WHAT IS IT? Why doen' t he sleep? Can anyone pleas tell me what is the latest age by which children finally DO start sleeping?

Hi Tina, It is not any of these things. Your toddler is teething. My son is going through exactly the same thing. In the middle of the night he wakes up screaming and that' s because his sleep breaks and he feels the pain of the teeth. Have you checked how many teeth he has? If the molars are in then the second molars must be coming in. The only thing you can do is give him some teething relief and it should last at the most for 2 weeks.

Hi Tina,
It could be one of three things:
1. As Mandeep said, his body could be aching from all the running that they do.
2. You said it cannot be hunger. Is it possible that he is hungry, and wakes up repeatedly since you are restricitng his night bottle ? Give him a bottle and see if he goes back to sleep. My son is 15 months old and still wakes up once or twice a night as he is ravenous. If I give him the bottle, he goes back to sleep. SOME CHILDREN HAVE A HIGHER METABOLIC RATE. LIKE MY SON, HE EATS VERY SMALL FREQUENT MEALS. S ince he is active and his tummy is so small, his body digests the dinner quickly leaving him hungry in the night. Let them have a night feed for as long as they need it.
3. It could be gas. Sometimes my son wakes up and doesn' t want the bottle, but cries loudly. So, I rub his back from up to down, and it eases the pain. They can be in a LOT of pain with gas.

Hi Tina- you did not mention how you put your son to sleep. Are you still rocking him or laying down with him until he falls asleep? If so your problem could be that he is just missing that attention. if not, maybe he ishaving night terrors.

try giving bath then bottle( if u dont mind as what i think he is still too young to weaned off his night bottle) n try to do mild massage on your son' s legs while your son go into land of zzzzzzzzzz, after playing or jumping whole day here n there they r very tired spl. the legs n feets so if u massage then that will relex him.I do same with my son 16 months old son n he goes to bed between 9 or 10 n sleep through 8 - 8.30 in morning n will also have couple of hours to 3 hours nap in day also.

Sleep Problem due to itchy skin
My baby girl is unable to sleep properly due to skin rashes. I have resumed oil massages to help calm her down and facilitate better sleep, using CITTA Baby Massage Oil. Additionally, I am applying the ointment recommended by her doctor for the rashes. Could you please provide me with more ideas that can promote better sleep for her?... - Sanchari Tarafdar [View Message]

RE:How to Develop a Sleep Routine for your Newborn
According to me this is good but then you cannot force your child to sleep as per your wish as kids as really bad in this and they have a tendency to sleep in day and get up in late night so according to me this is not the key to success, please post if i am wrong.... - Anita [View Message]
