My baby is 3 months old.he is on Bf as well as on formula.I BF him throughtout the day and formula during night as my milk supply gets down in the evening.for the last few days he started to refuse to take milk from my breasts even during the day.he takes milk from the breasts only when he is sleepy but he refuses it when he is awake.then i have to give him bottle.i think he get used to bottles b' caz when we r on our trip usually i give him bottles as we can' t BF in cars or in public.I want to BF him as much as i can.I want to BF him upto 1 year.Plz suggest wat should i do?I am very disappointed with this Rupali replied. Firstly you have to take a decision whether you want to completely breastfeed or go the formula way. you can do both but like you said u run into the kind of problems you do.

Firstly you can go to 100% breastfeeding.

My baby and I could not get the hang of bf at alll…it was one hell of a dissapointing and depressing period for me as I thought this was for gonna be forever. But I never gave up..i just kept pursing endlessly. I left no stone unturned. I Visited forums and websites, posted my queries online at this website about issues I was facing during bf. Tried expressing a few times in the middle of the night. And it took a while boy! Coz my son, was drinking 6-7 formula bottles every day in the first week. 2nd week things got better as he started sucking at my breast. By third week I was able to reduce formula feeding by 50% and by fourth week it came down to just one feeding in the night. On the 37th day we achieved a breakthrough – I breast fed him completely. Touchwood for the past one and half months I have stopped formula completely. He is 100% bfed now. can u imagine what would have happened had I given up. ?

it has taken me 37 days to reach here and now i will find solutions to whatever problems i face in the future.

You need to build up your resolve as well. and your milk supply -)

Increase your intake of calcium - eat paneer subzis, take milk 3-4 times daily, take ur calcium supplement, drink juices, fluids etc. And everytime before you BF drink one-two glasses of water. Water is the best source for clearing ducts as well as stimulating milk in your glands. Try and stop formula during the nights completely.

At times you will see that even if your milk production reduces, drink
some water and give your baby formula once or twice, just for a few weeks as a temporary solution - eventually you will get into that cycle and your milk production will surely pick up. but you have to keep working at it.

Also another reason why your son is refusing your breast during the day is could be because of slow let down or low milk production. Dont give up please. and dont keep giving him the bottle always coz the flow from the bottle is much more than from your breast. he now prefers the bottle to the breast. you have to stop this asap. try and dont go out for another 3 months or so so that you dont have to compromise on bf and offer the bottle while you are going out. OR try expressing if going out is a must.
