hi friends,
I am 27 yrs old and already blessed with a pretty 3 yr old baby girl. I am a bit hesitant in having a 2nd baby as i had a very difficult normal delivery before in india and had a very long labor which in turn has lead me to a chronic back pain now. And i am sure with this back pain i cannot have a drug free delivery as i did in india. Now my concern is only this.In my case a c section would be ideal as i won't undergo labor for long and aggravate my back pain. As i have nobody to help me here , i must go down only to india for having my baby. I just have one doubt girls, just tell me if anybody knows if one can have an epidural in india if requested by the patient or is the concept totally absent there. In my case, if i emphasise will my gynaec consider to give me an epidural. I simply cannot take the labor pains without a pain killler and ruin my back any further.Did any one of u have ur delivery in india and had any form of painkilllers during ur labor. Please share ur experiences if any. Thanks

As nicemom has mentioned to you that her mom took an epidural in her times ......epidurals have been around a long time but most people in our parents generation avoided taking it due to the myths surrounding it! I myself resisted an epidural for many hours and went thru a real ruff labour till the aneasthesiologist came and explained the pros and cons to me and so it was cool. I had my baby in Dec'99
It is also not very expensive I think it is charged at Rs. 600/- per top up or something to that extent! Hey India is not so backward .......believe you me! ;) Madras would definitely have a good aneasthisiologist they have so many big hospitals there! So don't worry....Also very important is this piece of nuz I have for you and this is no myth I have seen my Mom actually being cured of a throat ache that she came down with and something as bad as it took her to oncologists in the belief that it was cancer and Nobody was able to diagnose the problem and lo and behold she had an accidental pregnancy 8 years later and with the birth of that kid she was cured of her throat pain. There are certain things that we pick up during the post natal period -Most likely becoz' we have neglected ourselves to look after the new born ( that is why it is so essential to follow some of the rules laid down by the older generation for post natal care - I believe and swear by it)which I am told can be reversed in your next pregnancy.....So I would say go for it and All the Very Best! : )
nicemom replied. hi new,
hey,of you have such a severe back condition, why do you want to take another chance? as your rhuematologist says that you may have some problems.....will you be able to carry the baby for such a long period. thats going to be a great toll on your back!!
the other alternative is try for the second, but then you'll have to be prepared for bed-rest.
my daughter also keeps asking for a baby, but we have to see our health, emotional stability, etc. as you said in the other message board, weigh the pros and cons.
if you decide to have another, i say stay here (USA) and deliver. you'll never get the same treatment there. your daughter goes to day-care, so you'll have time to be off your feet
(thats if you are not working). also you doc may have a c-section done to avoid problems.
as you aksed me...my mom delivered in bombay. but i have not idea of the present charges for epidural.
don't go to india for your delivery, call somebody here!!

nicemom replied. hi,
i delivered my baby, now 2 1/2 in the USA and took a epidural righ away, as i was sure that i wanted to enjoy and welcome the birth of my child.
i'm sure that the concept of epidural is there in india as i remember my mom telling me that she took one during her delivery, so you can imagine in what year!! (she was in a metro city). i think in india, you need to talk with your ob/gyn much before the delivery about your birth plan. in india, they are most concerned about whether the patient will be able to pay the charges!!!
in the usa, you can get it right away, the moment you think you can't bare the pain anymore!! i had the option of a pain reliver thro' IV or epidural.
with a bad back,i'm sure the doc will help you out with your request.
all the best.

Hi nicemom,
Thank u very much for ur advice,as i always had a doubt whether the concept of epidural is present in india. Now that u have told me that ur mom had one so many yrs back then i think it shouldn't be a problem now. In which city was ur mom, because if at all i go for another one , i will be having it in madras. Morever i am also in a dilemma if its really necessary for me to go in for the next one as sometimes my back pain almost kills me and i am not even able to bend down to pick up anything. Though the rhuematologist told me that i might have problems with my next baby, my family doc says that i can very well have another one, and hence its totally confusing what to decide whether to go or to go not.when i see my 3 yr old girl playing with baby dolls and feeding it and dressing it up i really feel that she will be a very good sister and will also enjoy the younger brother/sister's company. Thus its only for the sake of my daughter that i sometimes feel like having another one, but when i am reminded of my back pain, my answer is a big no.And if at all anyone had an epidural in india, please let me know how much did it cost u, as i just want to have a thorough knowledge of all this. Thanks in advance.

Hey, Hope you are doing well. Well don't Worry. Somethings are unplanned. You don't need to worry about it. When there will be right time for it, You will conceive. there is no fixed right time. Right time begins when we decide to do something. You just have to make your mind for it. And prepare yourself for it. Every time is right time. Don't take so much stress.
