Hello All,

We are planning to perform upanayanam function for our brother. can some one pls clarify the below points

1. Apart from head tonsuring and ear piercing, is nose piercing mandatory
2. How long he has to wear the jewellery
3. Do we need to feminize him before, during and after the function?. he is 16 years old, so not sure about feminizing him...can someone confirm this.

what will be my duties as his sister during this function and what are the other things to be followed during the function.

Hello Kala,
It is very nice to hear people are following the traditions still in this technological world. So what is your experience after upanayanam. How did your brother felt when upanayanam is done.

it is not necessary to do nose piercing and it is not mandatory as he is 16 years old it will be very awkward for him. now days nobody follows all the customs very seriously as in there is no need to wear jewelry for long time if he is not comfortable as our lifestyle nowdays is different.

dear kala,
Having conducted many traditional upanayanam ceremonies i can provide you with a lot of information.regarding your doubts:

1) as you said the boy' s head has to be shaved and his ears pierced and he has to wear earrings.About the nose piercing, not all boys have this done on them. While nose piercing has advantages and the boy does look cute with noserings,it is not at all compulsory. It is optional.

2)ideally forever, but atleast for a good 2 to 3 years.

3) usually the ladies who perform the ceremony feminize the boy,who has long hair and earrings for the ceremony so again it is not necessary

dear kala,

Congratulations to you and your brother ! It is very good that you were able to do all the rituals on your brother. Though he might have resisted it a bit, what matters is that, he was tonsured , his ears were bored and his nose was pierced.

Also you feminized him, he must have looked so cute and precious ! :)

dear sanjana,

finally the upanayanam completed for my brother on 13-mar at our village.Elders in our house were very strict about everything.we had some tough time in convincing my brother about this.

He is the only boy in this house in our generation (my fathers brother has 2 daughters). Initially he resisted for nose piercing and feminize, but he afraid of my father and elders and finally he agreed for this.

on the day of upanayanam, head tonsuring and ear piercing went smooth. during nose piercing he felt a bit of pain, i saw the tears in his eyes. my aunt and others put the ear rings and nose ring to my brother.

Later me and my sister dressed him like a girl and he took blessing from everyone. My brother was a bit angry for 4-5 days after that he is alright now, when the elders agreed to remove the nose and ear rings.

Feminizing part was the real fun for me...we all enjoyed a lot during that time. Thanks for your suggestions, sanjana.

dear kala,

I am glad that you have decided to go ahead with the nose piercing as well.well. Off course it will be really painful for your brother and wearing a nose earring wont be exactly comfortable. But the point is,it is a ritual, hence it has to be done.

About feminizing , I think you should start slowly and then proceed. If he does not cooperate, a little force from your side will definitely help.

dear sanjana, thank you so much for the reply.

From The moment we told about this upanayanam my brother read all about the rituals in internet. He is really worried about nose piercing and feminizing. He seems to be alright with head tonsure and ear piercing.

we planned the ceremony in 3rd week of feb.

my grand parents wants to go with nose piercing and feminizing the boy also, as they are saying its compulsory. I told its optional, but they are not listening.

really worried about my brother..

we some how have to convince him for nose piercing and feminizing him.
