I have been separated from my husband from past 3 years. Neither one of us filed for divorce but we have no contact. Am I eligible to adopt a child from India? I really want to do that if possible. Thanks in advance for your help. RS replied. Divorce/separation/being a single parent are not usually criteria that would in themselves make someone ineligible for adopting a child. What would be of greater interest to a social worker studying your case would be your level of education, income, family support structure..who looks after baby when you are at work et etc..Read the CARA website carefully first. CARA is the Government of India agency with sole authority to supervise all legal adoptions in India.

Once you have done that please feel free to post any further questions. I will try and help as will others. We adopted last year and successfully. In doing so learnt a lot about the system, which we try and share on this site when we see a half sensible question..(which is unfortunately very rare..).
