Waiting to try:I am thirty-eight and afraid to conceive
2001-01-07
Name: Veena

I married very late in life. My husband is 40 now and myself 38. WE want a child and yet we are too afraid to conceive. Will there be too many problems in my pregnancy? Will I carry my child to a full term?

Women have had children at 45. So, you are no exception. Late marriages are the latest social phenomemon. By the way, there are certain checks to be done before getting pregnant. Just to check normalcy of your reproductive system. One is Alphafeto proteins, then ultrsound and sperm check of your husband. But, do consult a good gynaecologist before doing anything.

It is pretty natural to have children at a late age. Women, nowadays, take time to settle down. So, just go thru the normal post-35 checks and go ahead.

Do not worry on the age front. I was 40 when I got my first babe. It depends on the persons constitution. Young women may have problems in delivery, and older ones might have quick and smooth time during delivery, or vice versa. Believe in God.

Yes age does matter. The body loses its flexibility after 30. But, it depends on you. You can regain flexibility by exersing. If you want to conceive, you can do it till 45-50 years of age. But, do not worry, that is the last thing to do.

As long as both of you are healthy having no abnormal kids in either of your families, I feel there should be no problem. Be sure you keep yourself happy and think positively when you conceive and ofcourse trust in God. All the best!
