My baby is 21 days old and I am bf her. We managed the phase after caserarn delievery alone as parents were not able to come from India, Life is now full of happiness as well as fears.
Could you please help me!
1. I am Bf my baby and whenever is asks then. The problem is that I am getting good milk supply in one breast and the same one has grown big and the other one is not supplying good quantity and the size has also remain the same. My baby doesn't like to feed from the small one but I am sure that milk is coming from that as whenever she stops drinking her mouth is either full of milk or signs of it. What can I do about it?? Generally, its said that 3-4 day after delievery comes the milk flow with pain, fever etc..I didn't feel any of these and felt I won't be able to feed her but now I feel the bigger side full of milk and then empty after she finishes..I don't know how long I will be able to feed her as with time her demand will also grow...

2. I feed her whenever she asks but sometimes she will drink hours with gaps because of sleeping or simply stopping and looking around.
Is it normal ?? when do babys start having a schdule because in my case I am having sleepless nights there is no fix time ...I asked my mother about it she said try to have a gap of 2-2.5 hrs between feeds otherwise her digestive system will go week....but I can't do that as she can't stay so long with those small feeds because of gaps..

wd like to tell that her wet nappy count is o.k and weight gain is also good.
Because she had jaundice after birth and was given a phototherapy, my fears have grown with time..everytime the same question \";if I am doing right\";??
will be glad to hear from you.

1.start pumping from the smaller breast while//just the same time you are feeding the baby from the bigger breast.
it should help..if it does not,,make it a concern to your lactation consultant..oftn in ne womns body not both the breast produces equal amts of milk,,its like if you measure your eyes, ears or even both of your hands and legs,,they will not be exactly same,,esp the lining wise or when it comes to ear lobes,,fat lining! its a quite natural,,its just that in your case,it has affcted your milk supply,,and it might be abit more lower thn the average differnce....no problem,,see if pumping helps you.
also, massage the small breasts more often, and try to feed baby from smaller breast, after offering the bigger breast(like he take some 75% of bm from it, and thn try to offer 25% from the smaller one)..see if it helps..
about the size,,if and only if you are not havng ne other complications regardng breast like ne pains or lumps or ne infections thn once you wean your baby down the line,,in longer run though,,your both the breast will be of same size,,which means,,the bigger one will come to its original size...
right now its producng milk and the milk glands are doing its work,,which swells the size of breast,,and many people are able to get back in shape after weaning ! it dpends on how your body is acceptable to changes...
but i want you to visit lactation consultant and show your breast to her...or get the breast examination done from your gyn...
its not necsary that all women have fever, chills or ne such things when the milk flow starts,,it dpends more on body thn to rule out that it happens to all ! let mee give you my example,,i had csectn,i started havng colestrm when i was dilatd to 1 cm !!! i was induced earlier,,leading to long labour hours,,during which i was managing with not only labour but with severe pain in breast,,because of engorgmnt...which is very abnormal to happen,,,,and just after the delivery, i got fever,,chills, shivers and even though i was not in better shape because of an emergency csection,,my nurse hold the baby,,made her latch right after the birth and fed her from my breast !! i had not gain my senses and was shivrng at that time !! but it doesnt mean thats just because its not that happen to all,,will rule out the possblity of bm supply less ...instead i was bf my baby upto 7.5months,,and later on during my second pregnancy,,my dr allowed me to offer my bm without ne medication to my 13month old !!!
so remove that from your mind...maintain your milk supply as long as your body is able to cope up and as long as its not tiring you,,eat healthy diet,,stop gettng into loop of what ifssss !! they will never end..
instead think that if you are positive, your baby will grow positively !! bm or formula,,it doesnt make ne difference,,you are still in better position to offer something,,many people are not able to do tht at all !!so be postive and think positive.

2.your baby is too small to feed on demand..make sure to offer as below :

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1071&table_name=dis_breastfeeding

it has it all you will need for 1month old...

if your baby is having infant jaundice thn best thing that should NOT worry you at all,,is bm/breastfeeding !! feed more often and as often as needed as above chart or during growth spurt,,offer your breast more times...make sure to wakeher up for feeding esp breastfeeding atleast 1-2months of her age...after that its not required.

and so your question\" if i am doing right\" ,,,with more and more breastfeeding sessions with your baby,,,,,its answered \" yes you are doing just the right thing !!\"
thats the key for you.
as far as your baby is not showing signs of jaundice again,,you shouldnt worry,,let me give you one more link that can help you deal with fear management ::

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1612&table_name=dis_healthissues

take care, njoy your motherhood and try to offer your baby all you can !
good luck

Subject:  weight gain n other!!

Thanks a lot Hetal for your reply!!

1.I will get myself checked on my postpartum checkup, which might be after 1-2 weeks.
2.I have tried breaking the latch and then offering her the sec breast but of no use..she will sleep then too. But could you tell me how longer one should let the baby drink from one side n then offer the other?? May be I am offering her one too long that makes her sleep. After drinking from one she sleeps and then approx after 1.5-2 hrs she takes the other side.
I was told in hospital that baby are tired becoz of jaundice so they don’t drink and keep sleeping…..and that’s yy they don’t gain wt.
My baby is exclusively breast fed ( except some formula for 2-3 days during the days of phototherapy in order to avoid infusion) and here I am writing you the wt gain. and the dates we measured the wt.
She was born on 6th dec . 3080 g then she lost the wt as usual and was 2800 g.
After phototherapy and after coming to home on 15th my midwife took her wt on 16th then she was 2960g
On 18th 3040g
On 20th 3140
On 27th 3520
We were told that a gain of 100-150 gm in a week is the average and with a gap of one week she gained 300g.
Now we will get her wt on 9th Jan.
Neither colic or refluxes are the problem…
And her bowels are yellow chunky..Is it o.k???? I couldn’t understand about the bowel being yellow in that post…
3.I had gestational diab but I somehow managed without insulin….I will certainly talk to my Gyn about this..as age factor counts too!!
4. You wrote babys should be fed on demand or by waking them up upto 2 months…and what about the time 3rd month onward….how should one procced????
Thanks once again!!

1.if you have get it checked,,its just somethng that is natural for your body..it shouldnt worry you,,,like i said in earlier post,,as soon as you conceive,,your breasts get signals to start preparng for breastfeeding.and you start feelng like itchng, swellng of breast all from pregnancy and onwards,,some expernce leaks and some feel too much soreness even before delivery,,or dryness around the aroula area....its all normal...and in dat,,most womn expr thr breast size to reach almost twice or thrice to thr prev size..and it will stay the same until they wean the baby or may b longer,,dpending on women fat levels and body structure..

since you got it doone before 3years back,,i recmnd you to get the test done again ! and esp after pregnancy/delivery,,,its better that you get it done every year once ! as women are more prone to breast cancers/lump and infections,,esp aftr breastfeeding..its not that we have to rule out tht " i will get these, because i bf" but the possbilities are higher !

2.if your baby is not able feed from both the breast, inspite of your trying,,you can try breakng his latch and offer the other side,,,if still he is not coopratng, start pumpng the milk from the other breast while he is feeding the on one side,
if his wght gain is above average,,its a good sign and you are havng a good hind milk,,keep up the diet..
sleeping or even wght gain has nothng to do with jaundice,,check the post on jaundice and when to contact dr,,
butmake sure to wake up and make him drink his feeds atleast until 2months ! baby until 2months need timelyfeeds esp breastfeed baby,,,for formula babies,,its not required at all..
about your no of feedings,,if you see the link, you will know that its the desirable intake from everytime,,but if you notice, its expected that milk flow also varies ! as far as your baby wght is gaining which is the only marker that you are feeding him well,,your no of feeds should not decrease...if it was less you should increase it to 6-8times but if its more,,thn continue givng it..
if your baby had been on formula and takng the feeds more thn that is required in the link,,thn i would have recmnded you to lower the feeds to some proportionate percentage dpending on his wght,,but for BM, i will not advice you esp because your child had newborn jaundice..and its highly recmnded that the higher the feeds, the chances of less jaundice for breast feeds !!! surprsngly it sounds but bm has never proved to be harmful for the baby,,at certain age, a healthy baby is expected to drink certain bm,and if he does, he is expected to grow healthy,,,and in your care, wght is not the issue,,let me know whats his wght ?
if your baby is havng reflux or colic, it could be a possblty that you are overfeeding him !! but thats not the case..if he had this by now, your post would have been about colic or reflux and not regardng this !!! continue the feeds as per your baby needs and bf as often as required..esp every 3hours and make sure his bowels colours you check in daylight/not yellow light/but white light,,ne yellowish sign must be reported to dr.

3.most womn gets shivers and chills after delivery,,and aftr csection,,many get shiverng its quite common...but considrng that you had itchng, vomtng and such symptoms during the birth time,,that could be possbly be because of mild jaundice that has occurrd..both itchng and jaundice occurr because during pregnancy the liver becomes upto 30 times less efficient gettng rid of bile,,which all explains why your baby got jaundice. m not gyn expert but with prev birth exp and with some knowledge about delivery and pregnancy, that we are taught as it affects baby health also,i was able to understand dis ! there could b other reasons,,but is out of my reach.

about waiting for second kid, its better you wait atleast 3years which dr recmnd for even normal deliveries ! but in case you are planning earlier than that, let your gyn be the best person to decide about it. i didnt have ne complicatns during my pregnnancy or during delivery,,and i was never given prenatals or iron tablets,,so my dr was comfortable in givng me green signals from 9montths after my csection dat i can bear a healthy feotus,,if i plan ! ofcourse, the monthly checkup on hb levels, and all is required and was done..mostly because i was bf, and was not ne multivitamins or iron supplements..
so ask your dr about it,,,also about the csection scar,,if its the lower incision or bikini cut/horizontal cut,,your body is ready for another pregnancy after 3-6months of delivery.
it also depnds on your recovery and whther or not you had ne infections etc on the scar,,and such other complications...
ask your dr about family plans and let him be the best person to guide you for this. i am planning for normal delivery/vbac this time and i can guide you how to plan for healthy birth and pregnancy after a csection,,,if you plan for another pregnancy with all healthy diet and all that is required to be done for VBAC,,,but only if your GYN gives you a green signal that your body is ready for another pregnancy !
take care, good luck

Thanks for your reply.
1. Actually, I could feel this difference in Breast size when I was not pregnant but this was only me who could feel. So, I got myself checked and even they sent me to specialist and they said everything to be normal. this was 3 yrs back. The difference was very very very small. But after lactation the difference in size is quiet good and can be felt. I don’t feel any lumps and there is no infection…..
2. The otherthing I wanted to tell you is, my baby never drinks from both breasts during one meal time. She takes one breast at a time and then goes to sleep and then after 2 hrs or soemtimes even after 1-1.5 hrs she takes the otherone. Is it O.k??? As I told you, weight gain is in the above average range. Since last two days she has started sleeping 3-3.5 hrs during night.then she wakes up or either I wake her up…as I am always afraid of that jaundice phase when she used to sleep long and didn’t want to drink…
and during these spurt phases she used to wake up every 2 hrs or even earlier. But she wd never take both breasts….
In the link given by you is mentioned that 1 month old should be fed 6-8 times or on demand. On this demand basis I end up with feedings of above 12 or so but with one breast..won’t this frequent feeding affect my baby’s digestive system…???
3. My situation during delievery was just like yours except some differences. My labour was also induced (due to itching all over the body which I couldn’t bear and the doctors were not able to find the reason of it as liver values were also fine) but after a long day of pain we decided for a c-section. I had colostrum before induction but that was painless but the chills after c-section were very strong. I don’t know if they were because of lactation or because of c-section itself because during operation I was vommiting continously…. I wanted to ask you , how long one should wait for the second kid after a c-section and how much is the possibilty of a normal delievery after a c- section. I am asking this because of the problems faced during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes, the Hypothyroidism and in the last that Itching. I am already 32 and don’t want to wait long…
Thanks a lot!
