Name: worried mom

Hi Hetal & all,

My daughter is 14 months old. She started walking when she was 11 months. She says only three words like amma (mother), anna (brother), abbaba (excitement expression). And doesn´ t show interest in learning other easy words eventhough I keep telling them to her. If she wants anything like water she will point her finger in that direction and starts crying. What all should 14 month supposed to talk? Does this mean she is lagging in her Speech milestone ? Please help what I should I do. I am very much worried and sad too.

1. whnever she points to something that she wants, mention the word of the thing she wants and repeat it everytime she asks for it! one fine day even if she starts saying half of the word,,good for you.
2. repetn and practice with lots of display is the key for you, follow it. make sure to make it fun time like speaking in a particular tone or pitch and let your child njoy speaking it. at 14months, dpending on your child phase he is expected to point the finger at the things she wats/express with either 1 letter like ba for banana or likewise.
also at 14months, they understand most of the words but speaking takes time,,most kids are expected to speak from 18months onwards with full words or half words atleast..if not dpending on the place you live your dr might suggest you some speech therapist..however and however,,,,if you have 3-4languages that are used around your child thn he is most likely to either get confused about language or might pick up the words of the language that are easiest for him to speak,,it could be 1 word from one language the other from the other language or could be something like half word from one language and thn the other half from the other...it all depends on how he is able to cope up with expressing himself. it also depends alot on teethin ! yes, surprising though it sounds,,teething are responsible for clarity in speech and some words,,,when tongue hits the teeth and with the help of muscles and all coordination that sound comes out of the vocal.
she is speaking good at her level..motivate her,,whenever she is excited about something let that abbaa be replaced by wow...you speak that word and let her watch you njoying speaking that word and she should understand that wow means abaa and she will pic the words and expression.

until 24months if your child doesnt seem to express himself with half letter words or atleast some part of the word, you need to be concerned about his speech and by then your dr will recmdn you a speech therapist.
read him story books, show your expressions and let it be a fun time,,and your child will get interested in trying to speak ! 18months onwards is a major leap where most kids start picking words from parents mouth,,so make sure to be careful about the language,,and speak as many simple words as much before her,,,remember she is watching you and building her own vocabulary,,and when her tongue or mouth muscles and vocals are ready to cordnate with eachother,,all that vocabulary will bring joy to you !! at that time you will say \" oh my god,,when will she stop speaking ! \" :)
take care, good luck.
just dont get worried,,there is so much to do with your 14months old,,let her njoy her time of building her own dictionry...its beautiful to hear them at this stage.
