My son is 5 months old and he had ear infection like 20 days back. He was on antibiotic for 10 days. After 8th day ofusing antibiotic he started having diarrhea. we thought its because ofantibiotic. But after 10 days he is still having diarrhea. My sons doctor told us to watch for few more days as there is no blood. But now adays he started to be little bit cranky and when i try to open his mouth he is crying.
I heard that during teething, some kids will start diarrhea. Does anyone experienced the same with ur kids. Please help.
Thanks,

Hi ..my 7month old baby has started teething and i noticed this 4-5 days back. he was prety much fine, but for past three days he is passing loose motions 4-5 times a day ... after reading through various articles, i figured out that as babies tend to put everything in their mouth, it might lead to loose motions....but my baby has been chewing on everything for past 2-3 months ...he was absolutely fine all these days .... there is one thing that is bothering me ....a day before his loose motions started, for the occasion of Diwali, my relatives fed him some 2-3 types sweets (very small quantity, though - 3-4 bits)...could this have triggered loose motions ...please answer my question
Amrita replied. When i read your message, i was \" heartfelt\" . I am just out of my 9m old baby' s diarrhoea, its been only 2 -3 days!
It was a terrible experience this time. Her motions were all watery and she was passing it every 15 mins.
The doc suggested Vizylac (simple words-\" medicine to set stomach right\" ) and said she should improve be end of second day. Third day when she did not improve, I called him up again. He said now he needs a Stool test to know whether its bacterial or viral and said it wont be good to medicate the baby without knowing that. Unfortunately, it was Holi and sunday that day and we could not get the test done. It was only after the test on Monday morning that he found out it was Viral and gave medicines.
He said, say we assume it is bacterial without a test and give an antibiotic accordingly but if it turns out to be viral, it will only worsen the situation as antibiotic kills all bacteria-good or bad.
And this is the third time my baby has had loose motions. And everytime, the doc had suggested Vizylac first day and asked to go for stool test of things done improve in a day or so.
It was terrible this time bec the baby got dehydrated despite of giving her water. The doc said, give her more water or i ll hv to put her on IV. Thank God, that situation did not come.
I always knew that teething can \" lead\" to diarrhoea but is not the \" reason\" for it. This time I re-confirmed from the doc, also asked my sister who is a physician in another town, and a very Sr ped who is our relative in yet another place. I hv been asking all of them the same Q why why why did my baby get it. All gave me the same reason. When its time for teething, baby' s chew on things thru which they get infected. And not that teething process itself causes loose motions. My ped' s first answer was \" its always through food or water. Are your related things clean? Do you boil her water? \" I said i do boil water but have stopped boiling her bottles.
He said, first start boiling her bottles. Boil them till u use them. They are the main reason.
Second, 9m baby is big enough to be trained for sipper or glass. So try to get rid of bottles.\"
I knew about teething reasons and have been v v careful during my first baby. He never had diarrhoea when he was teething. During second baby, things are hotch-potch as first kid and his friends make things dirty.
Hetal replied. hi, talking about experience with diarrhea during teethng,,ask me,,it was horrible !!
for my daughter first set of teeth, she was havng it for 1month !! until the 4 teeth came out together,,but later on,,the symptms were totally different !!!
babies tend to have not only diarrhea, but also have ear infections, coughs, cold(oftn cold n cough or internal mucus build up in nasal, throat n eat passages, causes ear infection), and some has loss of apetite...
but its not for all babies,,symptoms varies,,not only for all babies but also it varies by each set of teeth that comes out,,often for first set of teeth the fussiness is higher thn the later ones,,,but when it comes to premolars, first molars or canines,,the fussiness or crankiness is worst...
its not that your baby WILL HAVE IT,,,but just watch on his diet and keep n eye on his activities nd make sure that there is no other reason for outbreak of diarrea,,as and when your baby starts teethng,,keep him well hydrated to avoid all severe effects of all the symptoms...!
good luck
N replied. hi there,
when babies are teething they experence lot itching and irritation and want to chew on things to ease the discomfort. they' ll try to put anything in their mouth within the reach, hence the infection.Be little cautios of what they put in mouth. try to give your baby clean and sterlized teethers.
