Medication Effect on Foetus:took wrong medicine

Name: worried

I am 12 weeks pregnant now. My doctor had prescribed me to take foligen tabs, which the pharmacist mistakenly gave as flagyn tabs. I' ve been taking 1 tablet each of flagyn for a whole month now. When I consulted my doctor after I found this out, she mentioned that flagyn is an antibiotic and is not suggested for pregnant women. She said that it' s difficult to know if the baby will be affected and cannot be determined by scanning till very much later in the pregnancy and it' s upto us to decide whether we should continue with the pregnancy as we would have to be lucky for the medicine not to have affected the baby.

This is our first baby and I' m so worried as to what decision to take. I really don' t want to consider terminating the pregnancy but God forbid, if that' s the better option, I have to do that before I complete 20 weeks. Could anyone advise as to what could be the posible effects on the baby if I continue with the pregnancy? Is it something that can be corrected after birth or will there be some permanent disability?

hi
i read your query, i wanna know the composition of the medicine, well if it contains metronidazole salt it is safe for you as mentioned below. Actually i am confused well metronidazole salt comes with the brand name of flagyl. please let me know

Almost any medication, such as Flagyl, is categorized in terms of its pregnancy risks. Medications in category A are not contraindicated for pregnancy, and are considered to be of a high safety level. Medications in category B have never been shown to have a risk for the baby, but there are not adequate studies to rule out risk. Category C medications are not recommended for pregnant women unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Category D have proven risks that may still be outweighed by benefits. For Category X medications, there is definitely risk to the baby and the risk outweighs the benefits.

Flagyl is a category B medication in terms of safety and contraindications during the first trimester of pregnancy. Flagyl, also known as metronidazole, is an antibiotic medication that is used to treat infections, most often vaginal infections. Flagyl may be given orally, rectally, vaginally, or topically.

hi,

sorry to know what is happening with you.see i cannot say much about how the medicine would have resulted.but the doctor knows the best.
its share carelessness of the pharmist,u should definetaly blast him ...these things should not be taken lightely.i know its your first pregnency and you tend to be nervous and worried but taking right medicine is important. You have taken this medicine since a month now, i dont want to say much but y dont u go for some diagonistic test or test which can be able to find out any physical anamolies in fetus.dont spoil your pregnency with worrying.certain medication does effect early pregnency, ask your doctor.only if things are really serious then only go for what doctor suggests.

i hope the best for you.please be careful in taking medicine.

hello editor,
hypertension is high blood pressure, normal blood pressure level is 140/90 but if blood pressure is more than that then its not good for pregnancy, so try to keep your blood pressure under control.... - bhavika [View Message]
