Due Date Club February 2005:Is this Normal??

Hi,

My son is 4+ weeks old, last 2 days I am noticing that he wails a lot while and just after feeding. It's like as though he doesn't like the milk, because he cries, i offer the breast, he hungrily drinks for a couple of minutes, then he wails at the breast, though there is a lot of milk in the breast...then he hungrily searches for the nipple and I offer the breast and after a couple of mins he wails again. I don't know the reason and don't know how to pacify when he wails. Has anyone gone thro the same? Any suggestions?? My mom said it might be because sometimes milk might be gushing in and he can't swallow it all, or enough milk might not be coming in...I don't know what the reason could be...I have tried burping him, changing his diaper(he wails his head out when changing too...), rocking him, walking around with him... I feel so awful at times, that he doesn't like me and that I am not a good mom...Can anyone explain this behaviour??????

Thanks,
Tweetie :)

Thanks for your suggestions...

Some days are better than the others but in general, he still has this wailing problem...today i am calling the pediatrician just to be on the safer side.

Hope he is just fine.

Hi,

I used to face the same, and I had plenty of milk. My baby girl would eagerly suck for a few seconds and come off wailing. So I would just let her suck on my knuckle(made sure it was clean!). Then I realized that sometimes babies just want to suck as a natural instinct and don't want to drink. It took a couple months for my daughter to discover that she could suck her own fingers and now she does that to satisfy her sucking instict and stays quite. If she is hungry she cries and I feed her.

Good luck,
oct mom

I have the same prob....but when i was in the hospt one of the nurses told me something which i will never forget....she asked me \";nisha ....do u like it here....do u want to stay in the hospital for a few more days?\"; and i said NO....so she asked me....\";how do u think ur son will like it here and at ur hime when he was at a very comfy place for 9 months?\";....and yeah i understood...why he is so cranky....it will take him a month + to get adjusted to the atmosphere.....so let him take his time and he will return the best of the days back to u....!

Hey Tweetie,

My daughter Ayushi is doing the same thing right now.She is a little more than a week old but whenever I try to breastfeed her first couple of mins she tries to latch on but leaves it later. So I try pumping my milk and if she gets too frustrated with the latching on then I give her pumped out milk .I feel guilty about giving her bottle but atleast she is not starved and I know it is for the best of my baby.
I am going ot ask about this to my pediatrician and shall keep you posted on what he tells me.Till then,
Take care.
Tanswap.

Dear Tweetie,
I am little bit leaning towards your Mother's explanation. Why not to express your breast milk and try to feed him with bottle just to assure that he can't handle the flow of breast milk. If he still does the same then may be it's time to give a casual call to his Pediatrician.
Remember such things are not really treated normal or abnormal. Each baby is different so we should not conclude as to everything baby does is normal or not.
Your baby will love you more than you can imagine, please don't get these aweful feelings that baby does not like you and blah blah....
