The number of ailments that can be cured by introduction of stem cells in the body is growing by the day. To this date, there have been found to be more than 80 diseases that can be treated through the introduction of cord blood stem cells. Researchers are carrying out further research into various other diseases that can be cured through the process of growing healthy cells in the body.

There is a strong resemblance between the function of the stem cells found in the babies’ umbilical cords and that of bone marrow cells. These stem cells can grow into the cells of various organs of our body. These cord blood cell treatments are especially popular with the patients suffering from various blood disorders as cord blood cells can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The diseases that can be treated through the process include Fanconi Anemia, Leukemia, Thalassemia, and lymphoma among others. Then there are other life threatening diseases where cord blood transplants have been successful are cardiac diseases like heart attacks, heart muscle disorders, severe spinal cord injuries, immune system disorders, and Parkinson’s disease among others.

Most of the time, cord blood stem cell transplants are conducted on children and young adults as the quantity of stem cells required for older adults is larger which cannot be met through the cord blood cells.

Finding a donor with matching blood cells has always been a tough ask, hence it would be better if the parents take the initiative and start preserving the umbilical cord blood of their kids at the time of their birth. The fact that they are easier to harvest also goes in their favor, as these can be easily obtained through the placenta and hence there is no need for surgically invasive procedure. Also, finding a matching donor for smaller ethnic minorities becomes even more difficult, which increases the need for preserved umbilical cord blood cells.

Needless to say, there is an urgent need to increase awareness among the parents about the importance of umbilical cord blood collection and preservation in the stem cells banks.
