Breastfeeding:Problem Latching On
2004-01-28
Name: Ami

My 2 week old son wont latch on to me. He latched on to my Right side for 3 days when he was about 1 week old. But now he gets very fussy even when he is 8-10 hour hungry. I have tried all sorts of tricks including SNS, Sugar, Jaggery, Honey to lure him to my breast, but in vain.

He is very happy with bottle though.

Can someone please suggest some ideas?

Hi Ami,
It may be because he is not comfortable that side. Is it the case on both sides or only one side? try different positions. sitting and feeding , lying and feeding. i had the same problem , i tried all the positions. now my daughter is going to be 6 months pld and she makes me lie down and feed her. she does not take milk if i sit and feed her. the first 3 months i used to sit and feed her, after 1 month she didn't touch my right one at all. then first i gave her left and then switched to right. try try and try. if he don't latch well ,u may develop sore nipples. so try ur level best. all the best!!

Check this site and try to get in touch with La LacheLaegue and their consults..go to their web site...I couldn't add to this replay.

Try putting milk on your breast before latching him on...trick him!

And make sure that you are using the right technic and position...

Sometimes introducing the bottle early on interferes with breastfeeding. Feeding from a bottle is much easier for babies and they might refuse breastmilk. Do not give up. Keep trying. Good Luck!

It does take several attempts to get the baby to latch on. You could try different breastfeeding positions. Your lactation consultant might be the best person to help you out with this.

Just as a side note - honey is not recommended for babies below 1yr of age.

RE:Adult breast feeding
I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me. It is a fantasy that drives me wild like nothing else, just the thought of laying my head in a woman's lap while she brings her swollen nipples to my mouth. Ideally, I'd like to finally explore this with the right female. If you are in or near... - Sanjayhyd [View Message]
