Hi All,
I would like to know about the tests which are conducted for checking any birth abnormalities in the fetus.My wife is in her 14th week. Couple of weeks back, she had the ultra sound scan done which showed the baby and we could hear the heartbeat also which was at 166 BPM.
Our gynec did not mention anything but said that alll is fine.
I had read about birth abnormalities like spina bifuda, down syndrome etc. i want to know how can we know about these abnormalities or any other abnormalities in the baby? When will the gynec tell us about these things? Have you all gone through these tests. Can the gynec know about any abnormalties with only the scan.

Yeah ,there is this ultrasound scan test -Nuchal Transluency Test which is specifically for testing the abnormalities like down syndrome.It is coupled with a blood test in order to give the complete information.Moreover,it is done in the 12th -14th week and suggest that this ih the right time for getting it done.
Moreover there are couple of routine blood tests for HIV,Rubella etc etc.Hope u r aware of them.

Not sure if u are in US/Canada, here once your pregnancy is confirmed Dr requests a bloodwork that confirms most of the symptoms and if youare over 30/35 then there are additional tests done here. Check with your Dr abt the blood test that she had and wht was covered, as I confd with my Dr abt these esplly abt the Down Syndrome etc. Also for Spina Bfida Drs recommend to take folic acid whn you are planning for the baby.
Keep your mind at rest if your Dr has told u if everything is normal...Take care and love to ur lil one..
