Omega-3s found in fish (EPA and DHA) provide the greatest health benefits and this only makes it an excellent choice for preventing diseases. Fish that are high in omega-3s are mainly tuna, salmon, mackerel and trout. Fish contain a large amount of important proteins, and the fat content of fish is very useful for the human body. Omega 3 fatty acids affect the level of cholesterol in the blood and so are excellent for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Fresh fish is always better than frozen. Fish should be cooked in a healthy way. Healthy ways include baked, poached, grilled and steamed forms.

Many diseases can be prevented by consumption of fish. Eating fish every week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing blood clots and inflammation, lowering blood fats and boosting ' good' cholesterol. It also contributes to the health of brain tissue and the retina. It can prevent diseases such as asthma, cancer, dementia, depression, arthritis, diabetes and inflammatory conditions. One or two servings weekly - may reduce the risk of diseases ranging from childhood asthma to prostate cancer.

Fish can be called a wonder food as they are high in protein but low in fats and has other health benefits also. White-fleshed fish is lower in fats but high in omega-3 fatty acids, or the “good” fats. They are good for heart, reduce inflammation and alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. They also delay the ageing process. Eating fish during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of delivering a premature baby. Fish helps people with diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. People who regularly eat fish have a lower incidence of depression.
