Routine Tests:Stem Cell Storage - Useful??
2011-02-22
Name: Sunita K

Currently following 4 companies are offering Stem Cell (Tissue and Blood) storage facility in India (Price 64000 INR to 125000 INR) for 20 Years.

1. LifeCell
2. Pathcare
3. Relicord
4. Cryobank

Facts:
Cord Tissues:
1. Tissues can be used multiple time and can also be multiplied if required.
2. You can use tissues of any other person.
3. These companies have a public cord tissue repository and you can pay per million tissues and buy as per your need.
4. Used to cure non-blood related diseases (kidney, brain etc)
5. These are stored at -196 degree centigrade using nitrogen gas.
6. Diseases related to cord tissues are more common

Cord Bood
1. Blood can be used only once.
2. Blood can be used only if the Matching test is positive.
3. Used to cure blood related diseases (anything disease ending with –mia)
4. diseases related to blood are less common

Couple of questions:
1. What is the recovery chance of these blood cell and tissues? Is 100 tissue blood recovered after 20 years? Is there any loss?
2. Where can we get list of all the diseases that are cured presently by stem cells?
3. How many of these diseases are common in india?
4. What is the total of the samples stored with each of these companies and till date how many people have actually used the stem cells?
5. What is of the samples that remain alive after 20 years? (say 100 samples are stored by a company does all 100 remain safe till end of 20 yrs)
6. What in case the facility of the company faces any natural disaster? Is the money paid back to customer in case of loss of his sample?
7. How the trasport of the cells take place in case of emergency and in how much time? What if delay happens in such a case?
