Please help, I am a working woman & i will be going abroad in Dec for 6 months business trip. I have a one year old son, he has breast milk only during night time. He would not crave for bm during day time, but at nigt he would not sleep without having bm. Now, how do I make him forget having bm?? Hetal replied. hi,at first you have 1 month,,,not bad for weaning..but in the meantime your supply wont vanish all of sudden,,get yourself a good pump,,start your baby on wide neck bottle, and if you arer getting a good supply,freeze the milk and when you are not there,,let your baby drink that,,,you can gather in the span of 1 month !
at the same time, ask your dr which formula(12-36monthsonwards) is right for your baby...at 1 year, actually you should be weaning off your baby to cows milk,,,start your baby cows milk, by giving your baby 80% BM,20% cows milk and by the end of 1 week, wean him off to total cows milk,,reducing the percentage of bm in bottle...
this will give him a smoooth transition,,and whenever its feeding time,,be away from him,,in other room..let your caregiver take care of your baby,,1 year old is easy to divert his mind to other things,,also, just before yourr breastfeeding time,,offer him full feed of milk or your bm in bottle,,this way, he wont look upon you because his stomach is full ! wean him to cows milk,,,,most babiees have been able to accept cows milk just after bm, because the taste is almost the same,,natural taste,,and its the formula that often causes difficulty in weaning !!
give him a full diet thru out the day, so that he doesnt look upon you for nething...1 year old is ready for family foods and is able to eat 1/4th of an adult serving per dish,,easily...
give him 4 meals in a day, with 2-3 feeds of 5-7oz of cows milk,,and he will not need your bm..other is,,pump the milk and latch him,,since there is no milk in breast,,he will eventually stop asking milk from you !! its a natural way though,,not much efforts required,,,
also, since your baby is 1 year, its better to wean him directly to sippy cup/strawcup or glass,,,if you are starting bottle,,it will be again be a work for you to give him transition to strawcup.sippy or glass...so at the same time,,start training your baby with glass !!! before you go abroad, he will be ready,,,keep working on him !
