Hi,
My wife has completed 6 months but the weight she
gained in last 6 months is just 2 kg, I am worried
about both kid and mother.
Doctor sayd its a matter of concern but at the
same time she says kid is doing fine and is taking
necessary inputs from stores of mother which will
result in health downfall of mother after delivery
How can she gain weight? please help me out
I have heard that most of the weight increases
after 6 months completetion but on this site
everybody is talking about gaining 8kg in 6 months
time, I am confused?
Please suggest.

Hey Deepak, If the baby and the mom are doing ok and doctor is relatively alright with it than the lack to weight gain should not be problem (according to my doctor). What I was told is that weight gain among pregnant women is different - depending on the women's body type.

Make sure your wife eats well, gets a lot of protein (beans, tofu, pulses, chicken (if nonveg) etc), calcium (cheese, milk, yoghurt), Iron (spinach, beans etc). Make sure she eats the required servings of vegetables and fruits and that she takes her prenatal vitamins and if she is doing all of that I dont think it will cause her too many problems.

Good luck with the pregnancy and dont worry too much about it.

Deepak,

I read in one of the pregnancy books that women who have been over weight before pregnancy can safely gain less than the normal weight gain.

Other than that, my doctor told me that ideal weight gain after the first trimester is about 2 kg a month. So total weight gain should be between 8 -12 kg.

I have been gaining weight steadily at the above rate. The only things I have been doing is eating whenever I feel hungry. I also get some exercise - walking or doing house work. I feel more hungry after this. I also do not follow any diet and eat whatever I feel like.

Hope this helps. Perhaps you may want to go in for a second opinion with another doctor?

Regards,

Sonali

Subject:  Trimester & weight gain

Deepak,

A pregnancy goes through three trimesters, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. So your wife has just completed the second trimester.

The weight your wife has gained would be a matter of concern depending on her body type, pre-pregnancy weight etc.

If your wife is getting the required amount of protein, calcium, iron etc weight gain should not be a problem. Even if your wife is not following the diet accurately, she should not be missing any meals, she should eat whenever she feels hungry, at any time of the day or night. In addition she should be taking her iron and calcium supplements and having milk products.

Why don't you also refer to a pregnancy book. I have been reading "What to expect when you are expecting" and A rough guide to Pregnancy and Birth by KAz Cooke. I find both of them very informative on diet and other pregnancy issues.

The doctor should be able to tell you whether the weight gain is sufficient or not. However, if you feel the doctor is giving mixed reactions, maybe you could consult another doctor to verify your doubts and fears.

Again, weight gain varies with each individual and this should be considered as well.

Don't worry too much. Read some books or surf through some websites. They should also give you more information.

Regards,

Sonali
