Due Date Club April 2007:Nuchal Thickness test

Hi All,
I'm just going to complete 12 weeks tomorrow and have an NT test scheduled for day-after. Has anyone here undergone this? Is it just like a normal ultrasound or is it different? My doc has told me that this is a more effective screening text than AFP and based on the results of this test, we can decide whether or not we want to go for an amnio.
thanks

KB,
it's both blood and sonogram. Sonogram to measure nuchal fold and blood to measure hormones in blood.

Both the thickness and hormone value will be tabulated to calculate risk for trisomy and downsyndrome. I would not call more effective as both AFP and this one are not 100% accurate and anywhere abnormal data demands an amniocentesis.
Also the nuchal fold and hormone values would be totally different as the fold vary from day to day and lets wait to see what your scan comes up with.

Do not get alarmed and get back to us once you know the full test report.

KB,

NT test is basically to find out if there is any risk for down syndrome. This test primarily measures the thickness of the skin fold on the back of the neck. Any value upto about 2-2.5 mm is considered normal (usually below, although 2 is just fine too). Any higher value only suggests the possibility of a down syndrome. And if there are any such suspicions, only to rule out any ambiguity, they conduct the amnio test.

So considering you havent mentioned any other things about your pregnancy, I would consider this a routine normal checkup that shouldnt really call for any concern (although if its your first pregnancy, almost everything is gonna bother you....:-)

Sunil.

Thanks Sunil and Neelima,
I went for the test on saturday. The screening was important because I am 36 yrs and its my first pregnancy (after 3 very early miscarriages). But the good news is that the risk for me is decreased according to this test. That is, the risk for my age and condition was first 1 in 165 but after the test it is 1 in 600. So, we have decided not to go for amnio (as the risk for miscarriage is more than the risk for the baby having down's) I am so releived.
