Hi All,
My baby girl is 2months and 5 days old. She had colicky pain for 15-20 days but now she has come out of it.
The problem is she is not able to sleep well due to continuous itching in her mouth, she wants to put everything like clothes, her fingers in her mouth and lot of saliva comes out of her mouth.

we tried to give her soother but she is not able to hold it in her mouth. at this age, she has average 12-13 hours of sleep but she wakes up continuous for rest of the time.

Please advice us that at this age gums ithcing can start or is it something else, also suggest some diets for me so that she can get sleep more.

Thanks a lot,

Darshana

I have a month old baby who is going through her colic now, i am using a medicine called Colimax which helps her sleep through out the nite with out any disturbance. Otherwise she would would wake up every 10 mins and cry.'

You can also do this: should help.

The 5 S' s

But now a new system that involves the 5 S' s -- swaddling, side/stomach holding, shushing, swinging, and sucking -- can calm squalling infants, he says. This, says Karp, activates the baby' s calming reflex during the first three to four months of life by mimicking the experiences in the uterus.

# Swaddling: Wrap your baby tightly in a receiving blanket to duplicate the feelings of warmth and protection, and the \" tight fit,\" in the womb. Swaddling also stops your baby' s uncontrolled arm and leg flailing that can contribute to hysterical wailing. Karp says your baby will be calmer if she' s swaddled 12-20 hours a day in the beginning. \" Twelve hours may seem like a lot from our point of view, but to the newborn, it' s already a 50 percent cutback on the 24-hour-a-day ' snuggling' in the uterus,\" he explains.

# Side/stomach soothing: Lay your baby on her side or stomach, which Karp believes shuts down the baby' s \" Moro reflex,\" or a sensation of falling, and thus helps keep her calm. (He adds, however, that a baby should never be put to sleep on her stomach, since this may increase the risk of SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome).

# Shushing sounds: There is a whooshing noise within the womb, caused by blood flowing through the mother' s arteries. You can recreate this sound with a \" white noise\" machine, a tape or CD with these \" white noise\" sounds: a dishwasher, a car ride or a hair dryer.

# Swinging: Rhythmic movements in an infant swing, hammock, moving automobile, or baby carrier can keep your baby content.

# Sucking: Occupy your baby with a pacifier, infant bottle, or a mother' s nipple (which Karp describes as \" the all-time, No. 1 sucking toy in the world.\" )

Hi Hetal,
thanks a ton for your detailed reply.
she tries to put her hand and tries to lick her cradle clothes when i put her in cradle. she just turns on her side and cries like anything, but if i take her from cradle and try to give bm she is not taking at that time.
Regarding sleep, doctor is telling that sleep may improve in future stage. and she seemed to be hyperactive since she was inside. now also we can know from her eyes that she is sleepy like anythihng but she will fight upto the last moment and will sleep after two hours we put her into cradle.
so finally i m planning to give her dabur janam ghuti . we are giving colimax almost every day.
Please advice something to increase her sleep.I am doing massage every day she enjoys it also. she sleeps after massage in day time and wakes up whole night. i tried massage at night also but she doesnt sleep.

thanks again,
darshana

there are 2 things with babies at 2months old putting their hands or watever around in their mouth. 1.your baby is teething. orajel and cold soothers should help. or give her something to chew,,some piece of vegetable.and then remove it,she wont choke because she doesnt know how to swallow,,however watch for that.dont leave your baby alone with it.. make sure the vegetable that is cold enough to soothe her. also keep in mind, and do this ONLY IF your baby gums are swollen and are red. if so, THEN ONLY SHE IS TEETHING.
otherwise, normal itching at 2months onwards is ok.their gums start to become strong and hard because of teeth hardening inside the gums and eventually they will come out at 5mnths onwards or may be early or late depending on baby growth..
also, the second reason is she is not getting enough from your bm or formula.and seems to be hungry.
check on her weight, weekly at home, keep an eye on it,, if it is as desired by your dr, then the only prob seen is teething.

also your baby should be feeding right now at 2months,6-8 feeds of breastmilk for every 2-3 hours, each feeding should be some 15mins-20 around depending on your milk supply, OR 6-10 feeds of formula of 2-4 ounces each feed.
if she is not drinking this much milk or formula, she is hungry and thats y she is putting her hands in her mouth. now about saliva...because she cant be given water and she is not getting enough, her mouth is getting dry, just as a natural human body reacts to it, throwing out more saliva to keep mouth wet enough,,since baby as 2months old these functions are not that mature, they tend to release more or less qty of saliva, also this is just the right now that his mouth muscles, tongue muscles are preparing her for solids soon at 4th or 6th months, and due to that as well, her saliva ducts are also maturing..

also, please note that soon your baby will learn to mouth everything because of gums preparing for teething ! its a very slow process and it will take time. welcome to drooling and mouthing phase..
try to soothe her,,also cold nipple of bottle helps sometimes, in case of early teething and putting a patch of cold cabbage leaf on breast nipple soothes, before feeding, soothes baby itchy gums while feeding ! otherthan that, at 2months,nothing much can be done for teething or soothing baby.
before sleep give her a good massage and then a good bath, give her full feed and let her sleep...
as of now sleeping 12-13hours of sleeping is not enough,,she will keep waking up if she is hungry so try to feed her everytime she does that..often we think that m feeding well, but might be that bm is not in enough supply,,talk to your dr about it,,he might advice you to start formula in such a case or if nutrients is a problem you might be prescribed some multivitamin or some milk booster.

good luck.

looks like sign of teething. better check with doc once to rule out anyother problem. at this age babies shd be only on BM or formula milk. check with the doctor as to when to start solids. except special cases, solids will be started either in the 4th or 6th month.

RE:How to Develop a Sleep Routine for your Newborn
According to me this is good but then you cannot force your child to sleep as per your wish as kids as really bad in this and they have a tendency to sleep in day and get up in late night so according to me this is not the key to success, please post if i am wrong.... - Anita [View Message]
