Hello,
my son has completed 7 months and is in his 8 month. it is an uphill task feeding him solids.
he takes any new solid for a day or two and afterwards refuses to eat it again..
i try to give him 2-3 solid meals per day, as he takes it and the rest of the feeds are BM.
i have tried so far:
ragi malt, cerelac, rice dal veggies, veggie soup, oatmeal, rava/ suji kheer and upma, idli, rice ganji( this is rice powder malt).
i try to feed him when he is hungry, he takes a 2-3 spoons and after that shuts his mouth and does not open it! i take him out, make him sit in his seat, con him with water etc!
his weight gain has been good and is following the curve in the weight chart. how to make him eat his meals? i am thinking of giving him formula instead of solids until he wants to eat. any ideas?

rekhaguru replied. i think 2-3 times solids for a 7 month old is a lot. maybe he is not able to swallow and digest that much. maybe he can eat only lumpy food and not soupy vice versa. take it easy with him. every baby is different and will move ahead only according to their pace even if elders of the house put pressure (on you and the baby) that he shud eat so much amount and in so much duration. Dont bother! even if he has 2-3 spoons its FINE. even if he refuses food its OK. try after 2 days again.
Hetal replied. if your child is not takng the new food after 2-3 days,,go back to old foods that are already introduced and combine new foods with them,,and see if he eats the combination of both !!! also once your child gets used to one food like say one fruit, or one vegie,,start playing with texture, tastes, combinations, varieties with same food or addin to his dal or khichadi,,along with the old foods that are already introduced, and flavours,,at 7months, you can add in much flavours,,except some mint leaves or curry leaves tadka or a light sprinkle of cardamom on fruits puree or such...it will help !
Hetal replied. wght gain is the straight indication that your had been eating well, as expected..
sudden loss of apetite could be :
1. teething, check his gums,,ask your dr about some teethng gels or orajel if in us.
2. ne signs of irregular schedules or fussiness,,needs to be monitrd and might lead to some sickness ! check on that.,,ne temp, ne bowels changes,ne overactive bladder schedules,,stopped eatng,,pasng gas or ne other signs of cold, coughs or flus.
3.change in texture, flavours, introducing new foods, variety in dishes,,making him eat with the whole family,,eat it yourself funda like just letting him play with finger foods(check my reply to finger foods in feeding board,i just replied),,and change in tastes, lots of colours and shapes in his diet should help in maknig him interestd in food !
baby primary diet upto 9-10months is bm or formula,,its ok if he takes an extra feed of formula replacing solids,,but dont make it a habit,,,remember primary food does not mean compromising with scondary diet(solids),,,,
check my post to mom,,about 7-8months diet plan,,it will help you too..its on the top of this page,,,,
also, you can try changing his schedules and see if he accepts foods in diff timings !!
start keeping your child in 3 hours schedule of eating and drinking,,it will help him develop good diet habits and by the time its 3hours,,he will be hungry enough ready to accept all you will give.
make sure to increase his activity levels, and at the same time balance it well so that he does not get overstimulated..overtired babies dont eat well !! so keep it balanced !!
rest all,,if your child stops eating totally,,make sure to make it a concern to your dr !!,,,

Hello Hetal... thanks for all the information!! I am going to try with the 3 hour schedule.. i give him food once in 2 hrs or if he indicates that he is hungry earlier.
trying to get the right balance of timing, play , sleep etc is the key to feeding him :)
