Name: Hema

Hi Hetal...my baby is quite underweight for 11 months, she is only 6.8 kgs.
Her diet includes
breastmilk in the morning twice
rava upma/kheer/idli/dosa/chapati as breakfast, 1 chiku/a portion of papaya/apple around 11:30, rice with dal & some vegetable as lunch, again some fruit after 2 hours, cereal malt around 5:30 PM, breastmilk and rice and dal as dinner.
We feed her until she makes a sign as its enough for her. We are also giving iron and calcium supplement as per the advice of our pediatrician.

She is completely active, doesn't stay at a place for 1 second. She stands holding something, keeps blabberring 'dhakadhaka'.

She has not got teeth until now.

I'm worried about her underweight and no teeth. Please help.

hi hema,
i went through ur post of 28/11/2006 in which u mentioned that ur 11-month baby weighed just 6.8kgs.i would like to know how has she progressed.is she weighing better now? even i am facing the same problem.my baby girl is 2.2 year old n still weighs just 9.8kg. i am worried a lot.she does not like to take milk.she eats regular normal food like rice, dal, chapati, vegetables, paneer, butter, ghee, fruits etc. but in very small quantities.i try feeding her often atleast once in 3 hours, but i find no improvement in her weight.at her age she should weight atleast 14kg.she is otherwise very active, sharp, cheerful n a fast learner.but i am just worried for her weight.plz share ur experience and let me know how ur baby is doing now.thanx in advance !!!

i want you to recheck her diet,,,
your baby needs to eat more than what she is eating ! give her more varieties,,lots of vegetablees, mixed grains and whole grains,,add in oats to her diet...
your baby is expected to eat an approx of :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1270&table_name=dis_sleeping

if your baby is not eating enough,,dont expect good wght gain !
fluctuation of wght gain is common in babies but babies are expected to gain wght until 1st year of thr life,,after 10months,,i will not expect nething, but a healthy baby who gets all food he is expected to eat,,,is able to gain a couple grams if not in kgs !!
baby wght does not actually fluctuate,,its percentile grows proportionatly at lower growth thn before 9months,,and yes cruising and all are the reasons and that now thr body will tone up..
your baby is 11months,,i expect her to eat proteins, lentils, sprouts, whole grains, eggs or tofu/soy or other sources of high calorie foods...
your baby needs to eat them,,you have to understand that maintaining fat level until atleast 2 years of thr life is important.
about teeth, there are no worries,,babies or toddlers upto 15-18months are perfectly healthy without teeth,,and teeth development has alot to do with parents genesis passed onto baby,,baby own bone density and health,,and his own muscle tone(for healthy gums),,and yes ofcourse,,most importantly is diet !
your baby is ready for milk byproduct for yogurt, cheese, sourcreme,,where are these ????? i couldnt find them in your baby diet,,,
so offer her that.
here are some other ideas,,please go thru them,,at 11months you have so many options,,,dont compromise on diet when your baby deserves BETTER foods,,if that is what ensures her healthy growth !
now about supplemnts,,supplemnts are to aid the health of the baby,,but you have to understand that no supplemnt or even antibiotic will effect positively unless baby is on proper diet !!!!
here you go :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=6762&table_name=dis_feeding

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=900&table_name=dis_milestones

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=5638&table_name=dis_feeding

some recipe ideas you will get in:
1.wholesomebabyfood dot com
2.http(:)//homecooking(.)about(.)com/library/archive/blmisc16(.)htm
3.superbabyfood dot com
4.check on indiaparenting diet section, nice recipes therein too.
5.indianchild dot com
6.tarladalal dot com.
7.nandyala dot org
9.indianmom dot com site was also pref by other members.

i have pasted above all the links even though your baby is older thn theirs,,only because your baby diet variety or let me say options are less than required by 11months,,,so read these and you will know you have so many options available...

never compromise on your baby diet at the cost of his health !

if diet is fit, your baby will not need supplemnts !!

so upto you to decide what you want to give..if giving supplemnts would have solved the problems,,all the babies would have given these supplemnts,,but its not the case right !
good luck to you.

Thanks Hetal and Rekha for replying. I've added curds, more vegetables and oats to her diet. Her reaction is not bad. Let me see how she progresses and increase the options. Am against giving supplements too, but couldn't help seeing her thin body!
Sometimes she would've put on some weight...and then she catches a cold or something and loses some weight.
Another question, apart from toys and music, how to keep the baby active?

Hi Hema, 6.5 does seem not proportionate to 11 mos. but dont panic yet. my baby is 9 mos and we also monitor his growth everyday like all parents. once when he did not gain any weight for 1 month we contacted the pediatrician and he said it is normal for babies weight to fluctuate especially if they are too active. when they are burning so much energy and not getting enough rest their weight may drop. amid all the activity try to give your baby a cosy environment to sleep somehow atleast 2-3 times a day. even if she is not asleep atleast calm her down in bed ina quite room with soft music etc so that she will get some relaxation and build but some energy. how much ml/oz milk she has at a single feed do you know? babys upto 1 yr still need their full quota of milk apart from the solids. i think your baby's solids intake is perfect. but beastmilk intalk hopefully shud be 240-270 ml ie; 8 - 9 oz. dont worry.
