Hetal,my baby is 2.5 months old. he is healthy and is able to hold his head.

recently we noticed that his mouth smells really bad. he is breastfed exclusively.we saw a thick white layer on back of his tongue.culd that be the reason.what is it? my mom says that it is normal in babies. but baby mouth smells really bad.it is some kind of awful smell and i don't know how to describe it.

my baby gets colicky quite often.our main diet is fish or chicken curries with rice.could that be the reason for colic ?
we give him bonisan gripe water as suggested by you.we give it only when it is needed and baby seems to fine for a werk or 10 days in 1 dose of gripe water. But after that he again gets colicky, cries for 2-3hours.sometimes he sleeps without feeding.he cries badly when latched.
today he is having some rashes around his potty area. so it is worrying me now.

my mom says we should complete the dosage that is on bottle. in bottle it is written to give 3 times a day regularly. but baby seems to be fine after 1 dose, should we give 3 times a day ?
if we give 3 times a day, will he stop being colicky?

do breastfeed baby get colicky ? i read that formula makes baby colic.
please explain.i feel that my baby digestive system is not good. is it so ?

it would be very kind of you if you could further help reg my wife sore nipple problem. my baby has latched very nicely, his weight has been constant since a month. so i assume that he is able to get good milk, but why is it that my wife gets sore nipples.sometimes she can not bear it while nursing. my mom says that it is normal. my ped said that sore nipples happens when baby gums start teething. But she is having sore nipples when my baby was 1 month old.

we are really worried about his colic, rashes and bad smell in mouth.i tried searching about it on internet and on this site but i could not find answers.we have his regular checkup after 15 days.my ped clinic is far so i don't want to visit ped if this can be solved at home.

please advice.

do as below:

1.clean his mouth with 100% cotton cloth(pref washed in hot water and thn boiled, cooled and use it damp). put it around your fingers/thumb and clean the gums, cheeks, tongue, palate, and below the tongue....
repeat this after every feed and if he sleeps,,do it when he wakes up.if it goes off, its just milk deposits..and if it does not,,he needs to be seen by your dr.it could be pssobly thrush.

2.if the white patch or white spots are not only scatterd all over the tongue but also around gums and cheekss, below tongue,or palate,,check on that,,if so,,,,he needs to be seen by your dr.it could be thrush.

3.baby mouth smells because of the yeast on his tongue, cleaning will help reduce or rather let me say eliminate odor unless otherwise your baby is sufferng from thrush.

4.try reducing fish or avoid it in your wife diet and check for 7days. include more vegetables in your diet, and lentils instead. esp whole moong and greens.and let me know update on colic.Limit chicken.

5.about all information on colic, vomittng, reflux, check the link below and see if it helps you understand about colic. its pretty normal for babies to be colicky..no worries as far as it does not continue above 6montths.

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=6873&table_name=dis_feeding

6.if your baby is sufferng because of diet of fish or chicken,, its unlikely that gripe water will do nething good unless the diet is stopped or restricted...

in writing all about what your baby and wife is going through, you explained it quite well as to what is going on.
your baby is sufferng from oral thrush with all i read here..its common for babies to have it. so please make a visit to your dr.

your dr might prescribe your wife some antifungal medication for her nipples to prevent continuous spread to infant,,and your infant may be given medication dpnding on his health and severity of thrush.
the rashes explain that candida fungus has enterd his digestives and thats is just what givng those rashes while passng bowels.
keep the area clean, dry,,change diapers frequently.. also mention it to your dr.
he might give some creme for it.

limit sugar or yeast containing foods,in diet,,or avoid it totally for a while,,,and have more of yogurt in her diet...
and rest your dr will guide you better !

the good thing is your baby immune is good,,he is having this from past month or some 20days,,,,which explains sore nipples of your wife from 1 month.the reason why your baby cries when latchd is because of sore mouth because of thrush,,,

would appreciate an update.
good luck.

your dr has seen the severty so he knows when your baby will recover,,so go by that,,by 10 days, if he doesnt seem to recover,,check with your dr.
nothing to worry about,,often in thrush,,infections has to be stopped from both sides,,mother and child..as one will infect the other,,while bf.

apply creme as asked by your dr..before feeding if you still doubt, wipe off the nipples with clean wet washcloth,,so that even if cream stays off or is not absorbd by the skin,,it can be removed with the cloth.washcloth should be sterilsd and should be very clean,,100% cotton.after cleaning, apply some bm on the nipples,,as baby might refuse to latch on to dry nipples !

apply the creme in diapr area as directed by your dr. and also at the same time, let your baby remain without diaper..atleast for some 10-15mins after the application,,for speedy recovery.

if by 3-4days, the rashes still stays there,,call your dr and ask about it.it should go off by 4days,,as the cream is just right application..unless otherwise your baby rashes are because of some other reasons...

hydrocortisone, a corticosteroid is similar to a natural hormone prodcd by your adrenal gland.and this is used most commonly for babies, adults for curing all skin probs and other probs..
its safe to use on babies, only if its prescribed by your ped and not otherwise...the % decides the amt of chemical used to made creme.

please note, after this your baby has rashes or so,,please ask your dr before applying the same cream...the causes of rashes or eczema varies and so does the treatment ! so for all rashes,,applyng the same hydrocortizone cream might not be a proper treatment..

your dr has seen your baby physically and so i expect your baby to recover by that time...there are no other complication involved..unless otherwise your baby thrush goes really high..
however, the likeliness of thrust is on and off,,in cases where it has striked once,,and so it will be a normal case with your baby...

KEEP YOUR BABY MOUTH CLEAN ALWAYS to prevent thrush.before and after feeds, ask your wife to wipe off nipples and keep them clean.
ask your dr if the cream is to applied thru out bf session even after recovery..because some creams in market are for permanent application until mother weans off baby,,so that baby does not get into repeated infections/thrush...

thats all you can do to prevent..the current medication should prevent the severity to be a bit less than the current one,, in future,,however, it all depends on how well your baby hygn is maintained.

good luck,,
no worries, take care,,your baby is healthy baby,,so you should not be worried much !say my hello to neha !

Hetal you were right. my baby got thrush.took him to ped yesturday and he said the same thing. thank you is a very small word.

ped says he will recover by 10 days.he has given drops for baby and ointment for my wife. just as you said. ped also said that infection is passed onto my wife.is it anything to worry about ?

is it okay to apply cream when bf.he asked to apply after feeding baby. But i am worried if that cream gets in baby mouth. is it safe ?

for diaper rash ped said that if baby is without diaper he will not need any ointment but he has prescribed 1/2% hydrocortizone cream to apply twice a day for 2-3 days.
what do you say ? should i apply it. i tried to make it clear but my ped was in hurry and he left.
i read on internet somewhere that it has steroid. is it so ?

how much time you think he will recover ? how do we prevent this in future ? what are other implications of thrush you think my child will suffer in future. is it anything to worry about.
i hope this is not going to have any bad effect on my son or my wife health in coming future. Please throw some lights on this.we are really worried.

God bless you and your family.
my wife Neha has thanked you in person.

Regards,
Arun and Neha.
