Hetal replied. babies are ready to hear from4months onwards,,thus making it a good start from 4th month-6months..esp the ones with big pictures with bright colours,,with some repetitive words like bye,hi or sometimes just rhymes that you have to read to them.
during that time your baby will not understand what the pictures are but, she will get the idea of books ! thats the time, she will learn to turn the pages here and there,,give her that time...
after 6months or so,,baby often liked and dislikes the pictures and he will keep shwing you specific picture or page or book that he liked most..and at that time onwards you can expect him to respond as well,,as they do understand pictures and if proper reptitv instructions are given in same manner your baby will point to cow whenever you say mooo or viz versa...
let your baby fav page be the first page, netime you start...shw him slowly all the pages,,and see which one his eyes stick onto ! once you know his likes,,show him the rest,,
make sure to do lots of expressions, it will help your baby to stick to you and book and start developng interest just because of your expressn if not the book ! often babies above 8-9months, once they start cruisng,,they hate to sit at one place and in order to make it a habit,,make sure to make it as interestng as posble with lots of exprssns, easy words,,same type of repetition styles, and same fun words like aaa,,heey and such,,,and high, low tone,,etcccc
increase and decrease the pitch like moooooo and oooo goes long way,,make it fun time,,i startd readng my baby at 5th month, and by 7th mnth she would look at me, if she would hear the similar sounds from someone else ! or see a cow or sheep newhere in baby mall...she would point at it,,and say ooooooo... she was able to recognize it and she was fascinated by it that she could see the things somewhere else other than the book !! by 8thmonth, she knew what sheep and cow said !
after 8-9months,,start with colours,,they understand dark and bright colours first...
babies love, and learn from repetition...until they are 2-3years of age,,only thing that works with them, is repetition and practice,,,so continue doing that,,and see how amazing they are in picking the words, relatng or expressng themselves...
visit the infant books aisle or story book aisle and you will be amazed to see the age wise baby books !
there is never so late when it comes to reading,,..
good luck reading,njoy the fun.
anu replied. i strated to show picture books for my son when he was 7 months old. i used to make him sit on my lap and i used to tell the picture names. and may be after some 3 or 4 weeks i asked him where is the car picture. he showed me correctly. then only i realised he is listening to me. until then i was not sure whether he is attentive but i just kept on telling the names of the pictures. also you can cut big big pictures from the newspapers and magazines and stick them on the wall. see that you stick them at a height he can touch it. this makes them very interested in pictures. also you can keep adding the pictures and keep changing them. if he likes vehicles stik all vehicle pictures and keep repeating the names everyday.making children aware of names of things around us does not stop with showing pictures in books and forgetting about them. it is a constant rpocess that whenever you see it make sure you tell him. for example you show the picture of a dog in the book. next time when you see a real dog you tell him again that it is a dog. so by repeating childrent end to learn a lot of names. but please don;t get eh imporession that you have to always bore him with informatiojn. just keep talking to him whenever you can and that will help the observation skill of the child and books are only tools in the genenral learning process.

HI Nalini,
this is the right time to introduce books.strt showing big pictures n identify those to the objets at home .thus they relate n pick up fast.buy hardbound books small ones so they cant tear n read fairy tales or animal stories just for 10 -15 mins just when they r about to sleep.they enjoy looking at pictures, buty alphabet books ,colours may be too early to introduce maybe u can tell him u r wearing red shirt, blue cup etc..but they will recognise only after 18 mnths or so..make a habit to read daily at a particular time, slowly they will pick up and move your finger through the line as you read and read in a tone which interests them, initially they may pay attention haedly for 2 mins but thats fine continue reading n gradually the attention span will increase.
Good luck
