I am a working mom in India , and I leave by 1 yr old baby with maid at home.. The maid is alone at home with baby for about 8 hours...
I need to know if a 1 yr old baby is capable of showing signs if she doesn't like the maid.. she is a little reluctant to go with the maid.. but once she with her.. she is okay..

Definitely. A 1 yr old kid can surely indicate signs if it likes the maid or not. And irrespectively, a mother should verify the indications.

We cannot draw a hard line from child's indication, we can just guess.

Broadly, if a child is in mother's arms and the maid invites the child,
- and the child happily goes to her : bingo! u hv got a good maid
- child hesitates a little but goes to maid :
well, may be maid is good but the child has seen mummy after a long time so.
maid is mediocre, not too good not too bad
maid had denied child for something (disciplining) just a while ago and the child remembers that so doesnt want to go
- child refuses completely
-again, may be bec mummy is home
- if the child always does that, even when mummy has been home for a long time/holiday, then there is something u shd worry about.
- if the child refuses many other things regarding maid: like she feeding him, playing with her, letting her do child's stuff like changing/bathing/etc, then there is something u need to worry abt

It is also possible that that the child refuses everything particularly when mother is around, so it wd be good to seek a third person's view. Is there anytime when u r in office and at home its baby, hubby and maid? Then ask hubby how the child behaves.

Ever seen a situation that all of u are about to sleep at night but some task suddenly comes up for the child- susu/potty/changing/milk/medicine. If u ask maid to do it, is she happily doing it or frowns at being disturbed when she was abt to sleep after a tiring day? This will show u her emotional bonding with the baby.

Has it ever happened that u woke up the maid middle of night because baby woke up and needs milk/susu/potty/change clothes and she offers all help needed?

From what u hv said abt ur kid's behavoir with maid - does ur kid do that always? Is maid new (give child a month to accept her)? Does ur maid play with the child?

I guess ur maid is 'average' kinds, the kid doesnt hate her not like her but when u r not there he has no choice so stays with her.

I wd suggest you crosscheck. Let your relative/neighbour peep in unexpectedly without maid's knowledge and check things. Or you give surprise visit from office in noon. OR if possible, you come home one noon but peep in/watch secretly from a window.

good luck

hello jayashree
dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
