Do you think that a guru can be useful on the spiritual path? Do you have any gurus? How does one recognise a true guru?

The search always takes you inward. Perhaps you are your own Guru. Why go looking for one outside? Remember, ' aham brahmasmi' ? The divinity is within myself.

Hi Nachiket, you are theoretically correct - the teacher is within oneself. The paradox is: if you knew the teacher within, you wouldn´ t be on the lookout for a teacher.

For one who knows to look, yes, the teacher IS within. All of existence emanates from within the ´ I´ and dissolves into it.

However, till one is entirely caught up in the external world (Buddhists call it Samsara), one needs a teacher in flesh and blood to guide one towards the inner guru.

That´ s a great comment. Aham brahmasmi, which means " I am Brahman" Brahman is the eternal self, not the false ego. Brahman is the true guru. After all only a spiritually advanced person can know his self, and thus become a Guru. This is the meaning of the phrase Guru is God. Truly, there is no external guru, as Ramana said. It is only when there is duality, when things seem separate from oneself, when you think that you are Mr. XYZ from ABC, then an external guru is needed. But when you realize that XYZ is not real, it´ s only your true self that is real, then you realize your inner Guru!

BTW, the article should have mentioned that the Guru of all Gurus is Dattatreya. The man who was the Guru of Lord Shiva himself. There is a lot of beautiful meaning in his stories...

I think the key to finding a guru is not to go looking for one. It' s a matter of encounter, skepticism and trial through error and experience.

Yes, it all depends on your intention. Why blame the Guru? It is your own lack of clarity that is to blame.

I agree with Sunilbhai. Gurus are difficult to find. The question is whether our search is genuine. You should first introspect and ask what do you want? Do you want miracles? Then go to those numerous godmen who churn out lingams from their stomachs or walk on water. Do you want material success? Go to a tantrik? But if you want enlightenment, then you need to really look into yourself, and just wait. The true guru will come on his own, when you´ re prepared.

Gone are the days when people extinguished themselves in search for God...now the whole place is infested with saffron robed money minting sadhus.

Yes, that is a huge problem. I like the idea of a Guru but the problem is there aren´ t any real ones. How do you identify whether a person is truly spiritually advanced or not? for that you will yourself have to be spiritually developed and for that, you need a Guru. so it´ s a vicious cycle.

A good spiritual practice is to start your day (each day) with purpose, intention and in the way you want to live that day. That might mean that you start your day with thoughts of love, gratitude and ease. Or it might mean that you wake up without the alarm clock and just stay in bed for a moment and affirm to yourself, “This is a beautiful day.” It might mean that... - nitin gonte [View Message]
