Infertility Solutions:Decision to do IVF
2006-06-02
Name: Neha

My root problem is Ovulation (the follicle does not grow beyond 12-14 after taking 3 HMG's 75 IU). I have done 4 ICSI cycles without success. So the logical decision seems to be to do IVF. But I have reservations against any new treatment unless I understand it. I need your help to explain how a day would probably go when I undergo IVF. I mean what should I expect every day ? Injections ? Pain ? Depression (I have a lot of it already).. Please suggest so that I can undergo the procedure with full knowledge.

Hi Neha,
Did you mean Injectible cycles with IUI or did you do ICSI? IVF and ICSI are the same except that one sperm is injected directly into each egg in case of icsi.
Ayesha explained the procedure well. I'd give myself one injection in the morning then a blood draw to check e2 and ultrasound to check follicles. Then depending on the result the next dose of the ovulation meds would be decided in the afternoon. These were taken at night.
You must already be used to injections by now. The worst part is the waiting -waiting for the result of follicle study, waiting to know how many eggs were retrieved, for the fertilization result/embryos, then the 2ww. I have done ivf/icsi twice-no luck but I know many who got lucky on the first try.
Hope you are one of the lucky ones. Wish you all the best.

Hi Neha,
IVF will be pretty much like ICSI. First your hormones will be downregulated. Then you will be given additional hormone injections daily[which r actually painful] to improve the quality and quantity of eggs. Retrieval will be done through sedation and there may be discomfort later. The sperm will be added and after 2-5 days, the fertilised embryos will be put back thru a catheder. This is the least painful part. After that u take bed rest for 3-5 days and just wait for the result. U may be given progesterone injections, which again r painful
All in all it is a painful and invasive procedure but it certainly is worth it if u get pregnant. I think the woman's pain threshold goes up when she goes for such treatment cos she is so desperste for a baby. U have to keep in mind that it may not work because it does get depressing if it fails. Atleast u r giving it your best shot.I don't understand why u had to undergo ICSI if u have only probs with the egg. Usually ICSI is done for men with who have prob with motility, or low sperm count.
All the best. Don't mean to frighten u but u did want to know the reality.
Luv,
Ayesha
