Due Date Club November 2003:Glucose Test with a difference

Name: Simmi

Hey Gals. Just thought would share with you that I went with the intention of getting my glucose tolerance test today but the doc said that they will first do the glucose blood test and only if the result is abnormal will they call me in for the tolerance test. So wait a while longer to know what result and what action.
Did get a surprise ultrasound done today too, as the doc suspected excess fluid, but was relieved it was not abnormal. However, did say generous amount of fluid in the report. So bit alarmed, have given blood for other regular tests too, iron levels etc. Let's hope it is all fine.
Have to see the doc again in 2 weeks instead of 4 weeks, which is good as she can monitor fluid levels better then.
My groins are hurting a lot lately and tough to walk, doc just said to rest and take paracetamol, but wondered if any of you were feeling something similar?
Take care.

Hi Avi and Vidhya. Why I said the test was different was cause I was not asked to drink no drink before the blood sample was taken. Only if my sugar level comes high will I be asked to take the glucose tolerance test. Since I thought you guys had the drink n then blood test, I thought here it was different. Anyways, glad u guys have cleared ur test. Take care.

Hi Simmi,

Yes, infact there is a difference. I just found out that GTT or Glucose Tolerance Test, is actually the three-hour test and one hour test is called blood glucose test. During the one hour test, we are infact asked to drink the glucose mixture. Your case sounds more like how they check for diabetes in non-pregnant women. I guess, there's not much difference there. Your doctor knows it better. In India or Canada, I believe they never do this test. So, its always better to control our sugar intake whether we are tested positive or negative, or whether we are pregnant or not pregnant.

Good luck with your test.

Vindhya

Hey Simmi, now I see the difference....Yeah, we did have to drink an extremely sweet and carbonated drink.....

Hmmmmmmm... your's is surely different cause even when they do a glucose test for non-pregnant people, they have them drink the soda as far as I know....
Anyways...I am sure everything will be fine... let us know when you hear something..

Hi Simmi,

As Avi mentioned, we too have glocuse blood tests. I got my results today. They said my sugar level was 98 and is within the limit.

I am glad your fluid level was not abnormal. Please keep us updated. What was your little one doing during the ultrasound?

I had an urgent appointment today as I had a bump in the thigh/groin area. Man, it was hurting. The doctor has prescribed some antibiotics.

The other bad news is.. they found out that I am aneamic, but said that my prenatal vitamins were sufficient.

Take care,
Vindhya

Hi Vidhya. Thx for ur wishes. My little one was moving around with head down!! Quite funny but was gr8 to say a surprise hello as ultrasound was not expected! Was gr8 to hear the heart beat...makes me all teary somehow!
Sorry to hear about your groin area. Hope u feel better soon. About being aneamic, you could take iron tablets, if they r not included in ur prenatal tabs. Or else try to eat more green veg, spinach, peas etc. I have yet to find out result of that test too. I am having prenatal vitamins though.
Fingers crossed, we'll all sail through it fine. Take care.

Hey Simmi, thats how our glucose tests are done out here (atleast in the US of A)....I am sure everything will be fine..

Glad to hear that everything is fine with the amount of amniotic fluid for now. Did the doctor ask you to do anyting to help reduce the \";generous amount\";. I think the only thing they can ask you do is not drink too much water.

Man, my downunder has been hurting for over two months now....My doctor sent me to a physical therapist who suggested kegals but not relief until now. I cant seem to be able to open my legs up leave alone walking. Its the result of the weight of the expanding uterus and the baby inside falling on our pelvis, so we will have to bear with it for the next few months....

My appointments are every 3 weeks for the next two visit, so will be seeing the doc more frequently.

You take care and keep us updated with our GT results....

ps: hows the baby doing, you must have got to see him/her when you had your ultrasound...

Hi Avi. Thanks for the reassuring words. Well, the baby is doing well, was moving around n was head down in my pelvis. So i guess that was adding to the discomfort down under. The doc said the baby was not over size for me so that is promising. However, the fluid level does worry me and I think doc didn't want to scare me but she didn't say anything about precautions or not drinking water. I guess if they stop us drinking water, then chances of urine infection are there, so I don't know but hoping in two weeks when I see her again, things have settled down a bit.
The hospital only contacts me if there is something wrong with my test results so deep down I am not hoping to hear anything from them, but will check with them in two weeks when I go again. Hope for the best.
Sorry to hear about the discomfort you are having, I can relate to it. Let's hope we can do some streching and pelvic exercise, when we can to help find some relief. Countdown has begun, we r nearly in the third trimester, so we can do it!! Keep the faith.

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a Diaper Service Provider in Bangalore? They generally provide cloth diapers and replace them with a new set every 2-3 days.

Thanks in advance
