Milestones:What is the first milestone for a baby

Hi All,

My son is about 7 weeks old and I am curious to know what is the first mile stone that I should watch out for. A chart in my pediatrician's office shows that social smile is the first mile stone and babies are expected to give social smile between 4 to 6 weeks. My son does not smile except for in sleep. During his alert times he does purse his lips and wrinkle his nose , and give a naughty look. Not sure if this is social smile. Please share your experiences on babies milestones as it will help me a first time mom.

Cheers
Subha

Hi, my baby is 6 weeks, but only smiles in her sleep as well. I think maybe I saw her smile once, but it wasn't at us, so I don't know if it was social or just gas. In some articles I read, some babies smile later, like around 2 months or so.

Hi,
I am a new mom too, my daughter is 7 months old. From what I remember, around the 5th or 6th week they start smiling in response to people around them and these are big smiles unlike the smiles during sleep. The next should be good head control around 3 months, rolling from back to front around 4-5 months, sitting by 5 and half months with support and gradually progressing to sitting steadily without support for as much time as the baby wants by six and half months. Also the baby starts pushing itself to move around by 5-6 months. My daughter started covering her play area about a 2 meter radius by six months by whhatever way she could move, using her head, feet, props etc. Keep watching you shall be thrilled by each new move and response. Lastly, all babies are not the same, watch your baby for these general timelines for each activity but don't compare and panic as they are all different. If you feel a milestone has not reach around the expected time consult your doctor, no harm in taking a medical opinion.

dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
