My son is 4 and 1/2 months old. His birth weight was 2.9 kg and his current weight is 7.5kg. he is a average eater/drinker. I was a mild GDM from my 33 weeks onwards. Will it have any implications on my son.

Hetal, pl. advise.

with birthweight 2.9kgs,and current weight 7.5kgs,,at 4.5mnths,, he is expected to be around 6kgs-7kgs,,and yours is just 500grms,,more so,,is ok,,at 4.5months, you cant count on babies becoming fat,,unless otherwise he is growing exceptionally fat,,which if so,,,your dr would have pointed you out,,by now......

well, putting on weight does depend on family history, but you have to understand that it also depends alot on baby own growing capacity and whether or not he will become just like his parents.,,now this is irrespective of gd...

when gd develops during pregnancy, its often coz of placenta that produces hormones that cause insulin resistance....this raises blood sugar levels in both mother, and the fetus..the infants born in this complication, are often born with high birth weight and their birth weight cannot be considered as 100% healthy birth weight.also studies have shown that these infants are MORE LIKELY to develop diabetes when adult !!

now this possibility,,dpends on how the baby developed himself considering the living style, food habits that he takes after being toddlers,,which is a much later part,,and not worth discussing rightnow...
and other is,, ofcourse, how severe was the gd during the pregnancy,,in your case,,it was mild,,so i would rather say that it might not create much of the problem,,and the whatever the pssbility is there,,would be in later part of your child life like say above 35/45..,,and not early part of life...or if female child,,then may be during her pregnancy..

howevver, there is no specific evidence regarding weight of the baby in longer run due this complication.
your dr will defntly,,let you know that,,if at all he sees your baby, having the risk of being overweight,,which will be seen by 1-2years..

but there are other risk involved as well ,,i want you to take care of not only weight but also low calcium in blood, ne signs of jaundice, low blood sugar as to when your baby seems to be tired with minimal playtime allowed,,and yes a big risk for babies born under this complication is OBESITY.
so be careful regarding that.

never try to over feed your baby,,esp with this complication,,or i would say keep a check on his diet..

dont reduce her regular feeds as of now and....
3months to upto 1year a minimum or later upto 2 years,, is not the right age where you can predict your baby good weight,,or should not be considering that your baby will get overweight,,because you have to understand that once your baby will start cruisng, like crawling,,walking,,that time his body will become a fat burning machine,,and its at that time, his muscle tone will be developed,,and its then ,onwards that your baby will show his actual weight growth percentile and start having his own body mass...right now,,baby needs enough fat levels to give him a good physic and develop him fully.....
and yes please do consider the possibility that baby put on fast at initial months, to 9months,,,,thats how we check their weight on weekly basis and then after 6months, some countries go monthly,, and then once they cross 9-12months,,they are often called toddlers and that time onwards its either half yearly or yearly..

rightnow there is nothing to worry, unless your baby shows other complications and lack of responsiveness or her sensitivity is lost..play with her, give her a really good day with lots of play time and tummy time,,now that she is 4.5months she is ready for it,,since you already have this risk coming ahead of you,,if you want to pass off this risk,try your best to :::::::::;
to give your baby day full of activities, make sure he doesnt get overtired though, and once you are told to start solids,at your dr recommendations, avoid foods with extra fat,,give your baby a simple diet, with natural fats and no added fat...
and after meals, directly dont let him sleep,,,keep him upright awhile and then play with him for a while and then let him sleep...right now its ok.
bm plays an important role in taking care of baby weight so as long as you can express and maintain your milksupply,,its good for your baby !

also remember when you start giving her formula totally or when majority of her feeds is on formula,,,expect her weight to shoot up,,,as formula is heavy and has milk solids in it..in case of ne such concerns that may happen,,,,,always ask your dr if ne other type or brand of formula will work better for you..only if you see a sudden high rise in her weight by weekly..otherwise not...

but i would advice to keep a close eye on her intake, weight nd milestones....

there are no other implications or pssibilties tht i see as of now,,,,monitor your baby activities,,check his intakes and keep an eagle eye on his wght,,esp solids intakes and when switching to formula or milk in future...for you, as of now, your baby being an average eater or drinker,,,is a good sign,,atleast that nullifies the possbility of him putting n extra weight,if at all food will be the reason..
a very good luck to you.

hello jayashree
dont get afraid and dont loose hopes, your son is absolutely fine, and give him the proper tuition and avoid more playing periods of his, and you should teach him at home when you will get free time.... - praglabh [View Message]
