Spina Bifida is a congenital disorder (birth defect) where the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. This allows the spinal cord and the covering membranes to protrude out of the child's back!

Ya in USA we have heard of it & between 20 & 24 weeks there is a test done to detect this disorder. Though many babies seem to get it positive & there is a lot of worry etc, only in a rare case there is a possible defect. Here it is also treated & the baby is born healthy. Infact if there is this defect known, the doctors here do an operation while the baby is in, close the space & put the baby inside again & let it grow to healthy fullterm baby.
