Have you read any of the Upanishads? What is your favourite mantra or verse? Do you think the Upanishads are understood by most people?

Hi,

THis was a very interesting article on the Upanishds, alos known as the Vedanta. I am doing a project on the Vedic Hindusim and I want to know what are the main differences in the Vedas and Upanishds.

Does the term Vedic Hinduism also apply to the Upanishads? If any one can answer these questions, I' ll be very obliged.

Sorry Sulabh for the late reply. Let me answer your question. The Vedas are hymns - with or without meaning. Meditating on the sound of the Vedas is said to bring about knowledge of the universe and God. It is difficult to say how. On the other hand, the Upanishads try to bring this knowledge in words with meaning. They are like an explanatory text for people who cannot access the Vedas easily.

Of course, in the hierarchy of scriptures, the Vedas are far superior. Because the Upanishads are truly great, but they have limitations for the simple reason that you CANNOT put truth in words...

Hi, whatever little i have read of the upanishads is definitly interesting... intriging actually. But not sure what a lot of it means... as if there is asome cryptic meaning behind ot which needs to be deduced. Were these scripotures intenitionally written that way to preserve this esoteric knowledge?

Do you mean that this is like some great riddle that you solves, that by solvibng that riddle you crack the code of existence itself.

In a way that reminds me of Zen, where certain stories known as´ koans´ are told. There is usually a cryptic ´ nonsensical´ element in the koans. They are supposed to make the student experience the nature of reality by creating a mental state where such a realisation is possble.

The reason why you find some of the stuff cryptical may not because iot was written that way, but because the Upanishds are obviously talking about concepts that are not familier to the common man.

I stumbled upon a translation of the Upanishads in college and was intrigued enough to try to find out more. This is a good introductory article on some of the most important scriptures of Hindusim.
