Identity theft can become a cause of distress for a common individual. Find out what is child identity theft and find some tips for preventing it.


Identity theft as the name sounds is the unlawful possession of your personal details. Though in India it is not so threatening, in the western countries it is certainly a matter of concern. You lose your personal details and fall victim to the unlawful activities of the hackers, who use your personal details like your social security number, driving license, bank account details, passport details etc for their own financial benefits.


Nowadays, all the personal information being stored electronically, hacking has become a daily event that we can find in the newspapers. In the western countries when a child is born his parents apply for a social security number in the child’s name. This social security number is enough to open financial accounts. When your child’s personal information like the social security number is hacked and used for opening bank accounts or getting loans without your knowledge then it is a case of child identity theft.


How to Detect Your Child’s Identity Theft?

A child identity theft might go unnoticed  for several years until the child attains the age of maturity when he or she can apply for his or her own personal identity like credit card, bank account number etc in his or her own name. For this you are required to show your identification details, your address proof, copy of your child’s birth certificate, social security details etc.

Financial Account Already Exists

Letters From Collection Agencies

When your child gets letters in his or her name from various collection agencies, then it is a case of his details have been hacked.

Driving License is Denied

When identification details like the driving license or the like is denied to your child. The officials show reasons that a driving license already exists in your child’s  name bearing his or her identity number though there is no such information with you or your child then it is certainly a fraudulent case.


How Can You Safeguard Your Child’s Details from Being Stolen?

Here are some ways that can help you safeguard your child’s details.
  • Do not carry the personal details like birth certificates, passport etc everywhere unless it is absolutely necessary.Do not exchange any personal details of your child through the internet or over the phone to any person whom you do not know.

  • Keep your child’s birth certificates and other personal details in a locker.

  • Never use your child’s personal details to open your own accounts. It may cause problem for your child when he or she grows up.

  • Your child’s social security number should be used solely for his or her personal purposes.

  • Before sharing your child’s personal details assure that his or her personal details would be absolutely protected and kept in a confidential way.

  • Look for any other alternative option that does not require sharing your child’s personal details.                                                   
These are some of the preventive steps that will help you safeguard your child’s personal information to be hacked by the hackers and misused for their own material gains. It may also put your child’s life at risk and end up putting him behind the bars if there is any criminal record in his or her name that may be created by the thieves.
