Is it Safe to Eat Junk Food during Pregnancy?

Your eating habits during pregnancy will affect your baby to the greater extent. Read on to find out why it is important to avoid junk food and learn how to control cravings for junk food during pregnancy.

During pregnancy it is advisable to intake healthy food which ultimately results in developing similar preferences in a child as well. Eating more of junk food is considered unhealthy for pregnant mothers and dangerous for unborn babies. Studies and research suggest that the dietary choices during pregnancy may affect the brain of the baby.

Junk food VS Healthy food

During pregnancy a would-be mother has cravings for certain food or tastes. To satisfy such cravings ignoring the consequences of having too much junk or unhealthy food may prove to be dangerous for unborn babies too.
Junk food has attracted the taste buds of the young and old alike. Excessive intake of junk food leads to obesity and certain disorders in the human body. During pregnancy, following a dietary chart of healthy food, results in developing a healthy body for the baby as well.

Why “No” to Junk Food during Pregnancy?

Researchers found that eating junk food during pregnancy increases the chances of obesity and other disorders. Children may develop mental health disorders also. Fast food has high fat content and extra calories. They hardly have any nutrients to do any good to the mother and unborn child. Junk food can lead to excessive weight gain and water retention in mother.
Eating habits to a great extent will affect the baby in his or her later life. The baby will crave for junk food more in his or her life; this may result in over eating and cause obesity. Certain studies also indicate that children may develop anxiety or depression.
Obesity has become a major health concern for many nations. Obese mothers are bound to have obese children. Their inclination towards eating fast food or junk food is natural. It is advisable to keep a control on the intake of junk food during pregnancy.

Switch to Healthy Food

Habits do not change overnight. But of course, the mere realisation of what you are ultimately giving your unborn baby is a reason to change. For some women cravings for junk food may last only during the period of pregnancy. Switching to good food choices may be difficult for those who have the junk food habit in their normal life. Affirm yourself in taking a decision and switch to healthy food.
A healthy diet during pregnancy is providing a healthy future for your child. The metabolic activity for a healthy child will give a healthy body. With cravings for junk food children will also develop health disorders in future.

How to Control Cravings for Junk Food

Try these few food routines to curb your craving for junk food. Stay healthy, stay fit.

Breakfast on Time

Pregnant women should be considerate of eating breakfast on time. Include food items like juices, milk, eggs, fruits etc., will give a good start for the day.

Control on Quantity

A moderate intake of junk food will not cause critical health problems. Taking less quantity will substitute for the craving of junk food, though will leave you unsatisfied.

Exercise

As per your obstetrician’s advice, exercise daily and be active. Going for walks regularly is good to stay fit. It is advised that women carry out normal activities of daily life, except in cases of any complications.

Say “No”

It is not a difficult task to say “No”, isn’t it? This is possible if you have better and healthier alternatives for your junk food. Store food items which you can have as a substitute for your junk food cravings.
It is important for pregnant women to be aware of dangerous consequences of junk food. Remember, addiction of junk food during pregnancy risks the life of your unborn baby. Love your life and the one you give life.

When I was pregnant, I used to eat samosa a lot. Now I have a 8 month old baby. Will that affect my baby in anyway in future? Samosa is one of the junk foods and I am scared if it will affect my baby in anyway.
