Due Date Club July 2008: GD - thanks Reshmi, Priya and JK

I know, following a strict diet at this time when u are craving for everything is really tough. My doctor is not going for a triple marker test as he thinks that my blood sugar level at the very first test was high and he is sure that I will fail in my triple tests. My first blood sugar test read 204. As per my gynac' s instructions I' m using the diabetes monitor every 4 times a day. My levels are high on that after each meal, say in between 160 and 200. Only my fasting level first think in the morning comes low.

I have cut down on rice infact I just have 1/2 cup at night, rest of the time its either whole wheat bagels with little margarine, tea with no sugar, low fat milk, no potatoes and only Rotis, salads, and veges, sometimes fish and chicken. I have just started following this diet 3 days back, maybe it takes time for the levels to come down.

I' m more worried for the baby, I feel good movements and all but still I' m worried. I will start going for walks now. I live in US and the weather has started getting better now. I feel hungry all time but cannot eat like heavy meals and in between snacks do not fill my stomach. Since I was so used to eating rice it will take some time to adjust.

Hi Madhu,

Don' t worry about GD. some times stress also plays an important role in elevating your sugar levels.

One tip is go for 15-30 min walk after each meal. This will surely help in bringing down your sugar levels.

As you are a non-vegetarian, you can concentrate more on fish and chicken. Eat more curry which will fill your stomach.

I think you are doing absolutely fine with your diet part. Just concentrate on walking and exercising.

All the best. Don' t worry about the baby. Your baby will be perfectly alright:)

Hi Madhu,
I agree w/ Reshmi....take rice in afternoon rather at night. Did you doc arranged any meeting w/ dietitian to plan your meals?? sometimes it helps, as they tell u what combinations u shud eat like, combine starch with fat, so that fat is digested first and starch is released later in the blood stream...
take care,
Ishi
