The Concept of Discipline and How it Affects Children

The Concept of Discipline and How it Affects Children
For inculcating right discipline in children it is essential for parents to understand the concept of discipline. Read on to learn more about the positive and negative ways of disciplining children and their effects.

Discipline is one of the most important things you would have to teach your kids; unfortunately it is also one of the toughest. Discipline is the binding agent which builds up good character and promotes the overall development of a child. However, the meaning of discipline is construed in different ways by different people and when discipline is implemented in incorrect ways it can have scarring effect on kids. This article will talk about the concept of positive and negative ways of discipline and effective ways of implementation.

Negative Discipline and its Ill Effects

Discipline can be demonstrated in many negative ways like hitting, shouting, verbal and emotional abuse and fearful solitary confinement. Each of these methods has been practiced by many parents and the effects on kids have been disastrous. Children have been forced into depression, resorted to substance abuse, developed rebellious tendencies and have grown up with damaged personalities under the effect of these methods of discipline. Negative discipline methods do not teach kids anything good, they only inject fear and trauma in the minds and generate feelings of resentment against kids. The methods underlined above should be avoided by parents at all costs in terms of disciplining children.

The Concept of Positive Discipline

The Latin meaning of discipline is “teach”. Implementing discipline means teaching kids responsible behaviour and appropriate amount of self control. With moderate and carefully administered amount of discipline children slowly learn the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour. The ultimate goal of discipline is to encourage children to show appropriate behaviour and manage their feelings and emotions. Child psychiatrists say that this self motivated disciplined approach stems from self monitoring. Parents must understand that fair and good means of implementing discipline are possible.

Discipline and the Connection to Age

Parents must understand that disciplining a kid is essentially about ensuring acceptable behaviour. However, the concept of acceptability will vary with age and mental development. Child psychiatrists and children’s behaviour specialists are of the opinion that very young kids (under the age of 3) do not have any idea of right and wrong and hence do not misbehave. Very young children have a range of needs which they cannot communicate about except by (sometimes inappropriate) gestures.
The only way of “disciplining” very young children is by repeating the same message repetitively. Explaining things to your children must confirm to their age and mental development. For example your 3 year old kid will not understand the importance of putting on warm clothes in winter so it is unnecessary and unfair to resort to any other form of discipline apart from positive reinforcement.

Effects of Positive Discipline

Correctly administered forms of positive discipline ultimately have a corrective and emotionally reassuring effect on children. When kids demonstrate appropriate forms of behaviour under the effect of good discipline they are met with approval and appreciation from their friends, peers, school teachers and other groups. Positive feedback encourages them to embrace the structured discipline fondly and be less resistant to it. With time kids begin to actively seek appreciation of their parents by acting in a disciplined way.

Ways of Implementing Discipline

Use a firm and level tone of voice while sharing negative feedback. Do not resort to shouting or using abusive language as then the entire purpose of the message will be lost. If any indiscipline act of your kid amuses you then never show the amusement by smiling otherwise kids will take it to be approval. Demonstrate preferred behaviour and learn to lead by example.
When discipline is understood correctively and administered positively then it has an enhancing effect on the life of kids.

What are the ill effects of following the negative techniques for disciplining children? Which are the positive techniques of disciplining children? How to discipline young children? Discuss here.
