How to Discipline Kids without Hitting Them

How to Discipline Kids without Hitting Them

If you want to discipline your kid in the most effective manner, then you should avoid hitting, spanking or yelling at him or her. Read on to learn about the effective ways to discipline kids without hitting them.

No matter what the age of your child is, you need to be unswerving when it comes to discipline. There are certain aspects that should never be taken for granted and at the same time some are to be relaxed and flexible. You need to learn how to discipline your kids without hitting them.
When it comes to disciplining kids it becomes very hard to keep your cool most of the time. Parents should be consistent and stick to the rules and consequences that they established and make sure that the kids do the same as well.
Always remember that discipline means to teach or to impart knowledge and skill precisely. Unfortunately, it is often associated with punishment and control. Here are some ways you can use to discipline your child and find the one best fits in your family.

Disciplining Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers

The best way to keep toddlers and small kids safe is to keep temptations and no-no’s out of their reach. When your toddler crawls or moves towards something that is unacceptable or dangerous, you should calmly say ‘no’ and remove the child from that area or distract him or her.
Another effective disciplining way is time-out. Make sure you tell your child the reason behind the time-out and also why the action was not acceptable. Keep in mind that the time period should be short because longer time-outs are not effective in the case of small kids.
One of the most important points that you should keep in mind is to be a role model because kids learn from what they see. So, do not forget to watch out your behaviour normally. Keep your belongings in place before you ask your kids to keep toys where they should after playing.

Disciplining School Goers

Now your child is old enough to communicate and so you should make her aware of the rules of your family.
  • Explain to your child what you expect from her especially before you punish her for a specific act.
  • Consistency is the key to disciplining. Parents usually ignore certain behaviour when they want to let that go and become harsh with the child with the same thing the other time.
  • This is not fair because the child will get confused. So, it is important to decide what the rules are and then stick to them no matter what the situation comes.
  • Discipline does not include only bad behaviour.
  • When you punish for bad behaviour, you should also do not forget to reward good behaviour of your child. This will encourage her and make it clear what are the expectations.
  • Rewards and consequences should be given immediately. Children of this age will not remember things they did for long.
  • Timeouts work well with small children of 3 to 5 years also. Just keep in mind the age and then decide on the length of time.
  • Explain kids about the right things to do and not just the wrong ones they should not do. Children accept and learn positive instructions faster.

Disciplining Pre-Teens

  • Time outs are effective for pre-teens and young kids.
  • At this age your child will also understand the consequences of doing certain actions. So, do explain them and stick to your rules.
  • You can give your child a second chance under circumstances and also allow a certain margin of error. But make sure you stick to your words because kids believe that you mean what you say.
  • Do not make unrealistic threats. Also, make it certain that you do what you say so that your kids know that your words are firm.
  • Avoid huge punishments or long time-outs because this will have adverse effect on the behaviour of your kid.
  • Teach your child to deal with consequences of their good or bad behaviour.
  • Let your kids fail sometime. This will make them avoid repeating the same mistakes in future.

Disciplining Adolescents

  • By now your child understands what is expected from him or her.
  • It is important you maintain your guard and at the same time give some space to your child also. Remember, disciplining is as important for teens as it is for younger children.
  • Set the boundaries for teens regarding homework, visit to a friend’s house, dating and some more. Discuss with your child beforehand so that there is no misunderstanding.
  • Taking away some privileges is the best way to discipline your teen when she breaks the rule.
  • Give your teenager some control over things
  • Do focus on positive behaviour also.

A Word about Hitting Your Child

Hitting or spanking is the most controversial method of disciplining. However, here are some reasons why experts advice to avoid hitting your child.
  • When you hit your child it conveys a wrong message that it is fine if you hit someone when you are angry.
  • Hitting may harm your child physically
  • Hitting makes children fearful of parents and teaches them to consider options that can save them from being caught.
  • When children act out to seek attention, hitting seems like a reward for them.
  • Hitting hurts the self-respect of your child and might make her introvert or depressed.
Just keep in mind that base of effective discipline is respect. Experts give advice to parents to take time out for themselves when they feel the urge to spank their children.
